YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team returns to Rynearson Stadium Saturday, Oct. 22, for a homecoming date with Mid-American Conference West Division foe Western Michigan University.  Saturday's contest is Homecoming, with more than 60 activities planned for on and off campus in a week-long celebration with the festivities culminating with the Eagles hooking up with the Broncos at 1:06 p.m. inside Rynearson.  The Eagles enter the contest with a 4-3 (2-1 MAC) record, coming off a dramatic 35-28 victory at Central Michigan, Oct. 15. Meanwhile, the Broncos are 4-3 (2-1 MAC) after falling to Northern Illinois, 51-22, in DeKalb, Ill., Oct. 15.
The EMU-WMU contest will not be televised, but WEMU (89.1 FM) will provide audio coverage of the game with Matt Shepard and Andrew Wellock calling the action on the field.

HOMECOMING 2011: The EMU-WMU game Saturday, Oct. 22, will be Homecoming 2011 for the Eagles.  The game will be the 84th Homecoming Game in school history. The tradition started in 1926 when then-Michigan Normal College downed Kalamazoo College, 19-0, on Nov. 29. The Green and White are 43-38-2 in homecoming games, including winning three of the last six contests.
The Eagles beat Western Michigan, 19-2, Oct. 27, 2007, handed Toledo a 17-13 setback, Oct. 21, 2006, and edged Kent State, 27-20, Oct. 1, 2005. The three losses in the last six Homecoming include a 30-27 setback to Ohio, Oct. 2, 2010, a 24-12 loss to Temple, Oct. 3, 2009, and a 37-0 loss to Northern Illinois, Sept. 27, 2008.

RUN, RUN, RUN: In seven games this season, Eastern Michigan has rushed for 1,604 yards and 14 touchdowns on 317 carries for the 15th-best ground attack in the nation. In fact, the Eagles have been picking up yardage at a prolific rate and are currently on pace to set the school record for most net rushing yards in a season. The 1987 Hurons, who captured the 1987 Mid-American Conference title, ran the ball a program-best 610 times for a total of 2,701 yards. Through its first seven games, that 1987 squad ran the football 339 times for 1,532 yards and 19 touchdowns.

EMBRACE THE PROCESS: Every season under Head Coach Ron English the Eagles have made dramatic progress. The 2011 season is the perfect example of that as the Green and White have posted a 4-3 record through its first seven games, doubling the team's entire win-total from the 2010 campaign.
Additionally, it is the first time since the 1995 campaign that Eastern Michigan has posted an above-.500 record through seven games. The then-Rick Rasnick lead Eagles of 1995 sported a 5-2 mark after downing Ball State, 40-35, in Muncie, Ind., Oct. 21.

ALL-TIME VERSUS WMU: Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan will be meeting for the 47th time in school history. The Broncos hold a 29-15-2 edge in the series and have won the last three consecutive meetings. The series began in 1906 when EMU recorded a 14-5 victory in Kalamazoo, Nov. 17.
The Green and White's last victory over the Brown and Gold came Oct. 27, 2007 when Pierre Walker guided EMU to a 19-2 win over the Broncos at Rynearson Stadium. In that contest, Walker had a career day on the ground, rushing 33 times for a career-high 151 yards. Ryan Downard also turned in two interceptions on the day.

GREENE AND WHITE: The combination of Javonti Greene and Dominique White combined for  257 yards on the ground in the 35-28 victory at Central Michigan, Oct. 15. White carried 19 times for 161 yards and a touchdown, while Greene added 96 yards on 19 carries and a trio of scores. In total, the EMU offense racked up 350 yards rushing the ball to go along with 76 yards through the air. It was a season-best ground attack for EMU and it also marked the third time in 2011 that the Eagles had surpassed 300 yards via the run in a game this season.

WHITE THROUGH THE DEFENSE: Junior Dominique White has been a handful for opposing defenses to bring down. In seven games this season, White has carried the pigskin 80 times for 434 yards and a team-best five touchdowns. In those contests, he has two runs of more-than 40 yards, including a team-best run of 64-yards at Central Michigan, Oct. 15.

CARDIAC KIDS: A dramatic 30-yard touchdown run by quarterback Alex Gillett with just 37 seconds left in the game broke a 28-28 tie to give EMU a 35-28 win over Central Michigan, Oct. 15, at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Head Coach Ron English's Eagles held what looked like a safe 28-13 lead with 5:39 left in the game, but Central came back to score 15 unanswered points to tie the game at 28-all with 1:09 left.
Facing what looked like a certain overtime finish, the Eagles then took the ensuing kickoff and marched all the way to the CMU 30-yard line setting up the exciting run by Gillett. Kody Fulkerson added the PAT kick for the 35-28 EMU lead with 37 seconds left. Central would not go quietly, however, advancing all the way to the EMU 28-yard line before cornerback Marcell Rose picked off a Ryan Radcliff pass on the last play of the game at the EMU four-yard-line and returned it to the eight before sliding down to end the contest.

BLOCK THAT PUNT: Junior linebacker Matt Boyd came up big on special teams in the victory at CMU, Oct. 15. With the Chippewas pinned at their 25-yard line, the Southfield, Mich. product shot through the line to block the punt behind the line of scrimmage. Fellow linebacker Nate Paopao picked up the football and returned it to the CMU six-yard line to set up an EMU touchdown just two plays later. The blocked punt was the first of Boyd's career and also the first by an Eagle since Antwan Reed caught a piece of a punt in a victory at Ball State, Oct. 16, 2010.

HITTING THE 30s: Six current EMU players have started 20 or more games during their careers. The players, with total number of games started in parenthesis, are:  Brandon Slater (37), Andrew Sorgatz  (30), Bridger Buche (30), Brad Ohrman (29), Marcell Rose (22) and Alex Gillett (22). In total, EMU has 43 different players on its roster that have started at least one game.

PERFECT AT HOME:  Eastern Michigan is 3-0 inside the confines of Rynearson Stadium during the 2011 campaign. The last time the Green and White boasted back-to-back-to-back home victories before this season was 1995, when the Eagles knocked off UNLV (51-6), Ohio (31-20) and Central Michigan (34-24) on consecutive weekends.

BATTLE FOR THE MICHIGAN MAC TROPHY: Saturday, Oct. 22, concludes the Eagles' chase for the Michigan MAC Trophy, which is given to the Michigan MAC university that defeats the other two schools in the same sport in the same regular season. This season in the rivalry games, WMU is 1-0, EMU is 1-0 and CMU is 0-2.
In the event that no school defeats its other two rivals during the regular season, the Michigan MAC Trophy will remain with the winning school until one of the other rivals claims the title.

A LOOK BACK AT EMU's 2007 VICTORY OVER WMU: In that 2007 Eastern Michigan win over WMU, what started as a defensive struggle turned into an EMU offensive explosion as the Eagles recorded a 19-2 MAC West Division victory. The first half ended in a baseball-like 3-2 EMU lead. The EMU defense kept its pressure on in the second half and the offense came to life with 16 unanswered points for the 19-2 win. The Green and White forced six Western Michigan turnovers, with three interceptions and three fumbles. The Eagles piled up 255 yards on the ground and added 137 through the air for 392 yards in total offense while the defense limited the Broncos to just 199 yards in total offense on the day and just 53 yards on the ground.

ON THE HORIZON: Following the WMU game, Eastern Michigan gets a much needed week off before returning to the Rynearson Stadium to battle Ball State University, Nov. 5. Game time is scheduled for noon. The contest will be shown on ESPN+ with Michael Reghi providing the play-by-play and former EMU Assistant Coach Doug Graber serving as the analyst.
