Eagles Face 3-0 Setback in First Home MAC Match

The Bobcats toppled Eastern in straight sets as the Eagles fell to 1-3 in Mid-American Conference Matches

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped the first home match of their Mid-American Conference schedule Saturday, Oct. 1, to Ohio. The Bobcats took down Eastern in straight sets (17-25, 24-26, 19-25).
The Eagles fell to 13-5 on the 2011 campaign and 1-3 in MAC action, while Ohio improved to 12-6 and 4-0 in conference play.
Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) led the Eastern Michigan offense with a .429 attack percentage (10-1-21) while Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) nabbed a double-double with 12 kills and 23 digs, tying her career-high in the latter category. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) set up the Eagles offense with 32 assists while maintaining a .417 hitting percentage (5-0-12). EMU hit just .138 (41-22-188) in the match, while the Bobcats countered with a .214 (40-12-131) attack percentage.
Eastern dropped the opening frame 17-25, falling behind 1-0. The Green and White struggled on the offensive, hitting just .087 (12-8-46). Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Iaquaniello each had a trio of kills, while Mason chipped in with a pair in the first set of action.
Eastern attempted to even things up in the second set, but Ohio's offensive attack proved too much as they fell behind 2-0. Iaquaniello was able to rack up six kills in the frame, while Baker maintained a .714 hitting percentage, going 5-for-7 in her attacks. The Bobcats' had just two attack errors which was the difference in the second frame.
The final set was the Eagles' best offensive showing as they hit .178 (12-4-45). Baker was able to add four more kills in the final frame, but it was not enough as the Bobcats topped Eastern 25-19 en route to their 3-0 win.
The Eagles take the court again Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. and take on the Mastodons of IPFW in their final non-conference tilt of the 2011 campaign. First set at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center is set for 7 p.m.
