Mastodons Hand EMU Third Straight Loss in Five Sets

The Eagles dropped their final non-conference match to IPFW in five sets

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped their third straight match Tuesday, Oct. 4, at IPFW. After falling in the opening two sets 18-25 and 16-25, the Eagles took the following two frames 25-23, but EMU dropped the final set 11-15.
The Green and White fell to 13-6 on the season with the loss, while the Mastodons improved their 2011 tally to 11-7.
Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) paced the Eastern Michigan offense with a .478 attack percentage (12-1-23) while Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles in kills with 13. Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) also posted double-digit kills with 10 and Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) tallied a double-double with 44 assists and 12 digs. Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) helped out defensively with a team-high 22 digs and Baker led EMU with seven total blocks.
The Eagles fell in the opening frame 25-18. Iaquaniello had three kills in the first set, as Eastern could not overcome Emily Spencer's .571 attack percentage (9-1-14) and fell behind 1-0.
Roback and Iaquaniello each had a pair of kills in the second set as the Eagles struggled with just a .036 hitting percentage (7-6-28). The Mastodons hit .321 (14-5-28) in the set helping them to their quick 2-0 lead.
EMU turned up the offense in the third set with a .378 attack percentage (16-2-37). Eastern took the set 25-23 as Iaquaniello and Baker each had four kills in nine attempts. Mason was able to rack up 13 assists as the Eagles made the score 2-1.
The Green and White continued the hot hitting the fourth frame with a .311 hitting percentage (19-5-45). Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) had five kills in the frame while Mason added 14 to her assist total. Baker led the offense with a .714 attack percentage (6-1-7) helping to even up the match at two sets each.
Eastern struggled to keep the offense flying in the final set as the Eagles had a .045 attack percentage (5-4-22). Iaquaniello was the only competitor with multiple kills (3) for EMU in the final frame as they dropped the set 11-15.
Eastern continues the 2011 campaign Friday, Oct. 7, when they play host to the University of Toledo Rockets. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
