Marcela Rivero Wins Flight B Title at MAC Fall Invitational

Doubles duo of Miriam Westerink/Nino Mebuke win first match, advance at ITA Meet
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — EMU's Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) won the Flight D singles title here Saturday, Oct. 1, at the 2011 Mid-American Conference Fall Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University.
Head Coach Ryan Ray also sent his No. 1 doubles team of Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands-Thomas A Kempis) and Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia, Russia) to Los Angeles, Calif. this weekend, Oct. 1-2, for the pre-qualifying of the All-American Championships at UCLA (the first of 3 yearly individual national championships) and that duo knocked off the Georgia Tech doubles team of Lynn Blau/Elizabeth Kilborn in their first match Saturday. The Eagles will now square off against the University of Texas doubles team of Krista Damico and Aerial Ellis in the next round, set for Sunday, Oct. 2, at 9 a.m.
At Kalamazoo, Rivero won all three of her matches to capture the Flight D championship. She defeated NIU's Arantza De La Torre, 6-3, 6-0, in the first round, followed with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Jessica Easdale (Bowling Green) in the semifinals and defeated Sarah Hebble (Ball State) a 6-3, 6-1, in the finals.
EMU's Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) finished runnerup in Flight A. She defeated Northern Illinois' Emily Rogers, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round, came back with a 7-6, 6-2, win over and was Western Michigan's Rachel Denny before losing in the final to Courtney Wild (Ball State), 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (2).
