EMU Doubles Team Wins Flight D at MAC Fall Invitational

Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr and Ankita Bhatia capture title with unbeaten mark
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University doubles team of Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr (Adelaide, Australia-Sacred Heart) and Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools) captured the title in the Class D Doubles bracket here Friday, Sept. 30, in the first day of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Fall Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University.
de'Lisle and Bhatia defeated the Bowling Green team of Katie Grubb and Mary Hill, 8-6, in the first round and won the Flight D title with an 8-6 win over Toledo's Silvia Carvajal and Amanda Border.
In other doubles action Friday, the EMU duo of Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) and Daphne Friedrichs (Hugingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) lost their opening match before rebounding to win a consolation match.
Toncheva and Friedrichs lost in their first match, 8-3, to the Bowling Green duo of Nikki Chiricosta and Maddy Eccleston and bounced back to win a consolation match for third place by an 8-4 score to Ashlyn Rang and Dena Boulieris of Ball State.
The first half of singles play was also contested Friday with the second, and final, half set for Saturday, Oct. 1. EMU's Toncheva, playing in Flight A, defeated Northern Illinois' Emily Rogers, 6-2, 6-4, and was scheduled to face Western Michigan's Rachel Denny in the semifinal Saturday.
In Flight B Singles action, Friedrichs lost to Lexy Pitt (Toledo), 6-1, 7-6. In Flight C, Bhatia defeated BSU's Boulieris, 6-3, 6-1, and will advance to the semifinals. In Flight D, EMU's Marcela Rivero (Santa Cruz, Bolivia-Saint George) defeated NIU's Arantza De La Torre, 6-3, 6-0, and she will play Jessica Easdale (Bowling Green) in the semifinals. In Flight E singles, played in a round-robin format, de'Lisle Tarr advanced in the winner's bracket with a 6-1, 6-7, 10-8 win over Ball State's Paola Rodriguez.
