EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split a pair of matches at the Second Annual Spartan Duals, defeating Lock Haven, 34-6, before narrowly falling to Michigan State, 19-15, at Jenison Field House Saturday, Jan. 8.
In what was supposed to be a three meet day for the Eagles turned into just two matches as Mott Community College fell victim to bus trouble and was not able to make it to East Lansing. EMU utilized the extra rest and turned it into a dominating win over Lock Haven before nearly the host Spartans. With the split, EMU moves its record to 4-5 in dual meets this season.
In their first meet of the day, it appeared as if Lock Haven was going to make a surprise run at the Green and White, having taken two of the first three bouts in the match. Jared Germaine took a 10-8 decision at 125 before Filiberto Colon and Mike LeHolm fell in similar fashion at 133 and 141 to give Lock Haven a 6-3 lead after three bouts.
At 149, Corey Phillips responded with a 6-1 victory before Aaron Sulzer took his opponent in a major decision win at 157. After that it was all Eagles as EMU rattled off seven straight win in all, highlighted by three consecutive pins by Khodor Hoballah at 184, Nick Whitenburg at 197, and David Wade at 285 to close out the match and a 34-6 win.
It was a much closer affair between EMU and its in-state rival host MSU. Germaine was upended narrowly by a 5-4 decision before Colon answered with a pin of Chris Lyon to give the Eagles a 6-3 edge. LeHolm then added to the momentum with an 8-5 decision of Joel Trombly at 141 pounds.
After building a 9-3 lead, MSU's Dan Osterman put an end to the run with a major decision victory over EMU's Lester France at 149. Sulzer then won his second bout of the day when he outlasted Colon Dozier, 2-1, to stretch EMU's lead to 12-7.
Michigan State then started its surge by taking the next four bouts, including a win by 20th-ranked Tyler Dickenson who knocked off EMU's Nick Whitenburg at 197 pounds. By then, it was all but over as MSU built its lead to 19-12 with just one bout remaining.
In the heavyweight bout, the senior Wade had his most notable performance of the season as he worked a 2-0 triumph over 16th-ranked Mike McClure.
Sulzer and Wade each won two bouts on the day and both will look to carry their momentum into next week when the Eagles travel to Ashland, Ohio to take part in the Wendy's Duals Jan. 15. EMU will do battle with Campbell University, Olivet College and Gardner-Webb University.
