The EMU wrestling team surrendered just nine points combined en route to a trio of victories Saturday, Jan. 15
ASHLAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team swept a trio of dual matches by a combined score of 125-9 at the 22nd Annual Wendy's Duals hosted by Ashland University at Kates Gymnasium, Saturday, Jan. 15. The Eagles defeated Olivet, 29-6, Campbell, 53-0, and Gardner-Webb, 43-3.
EMU recorded an astounding 10 pins on the day including five in their shutout victory over Campbell. With all three wins, the Eagles push their record to 7-5 on the season and are winners of four of its last five matches overall.
Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley), Filiberto Colon (Belleville, N.J.-Belleville Senior (Rider)) and Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) each recorded three wins for the Eagles with Germaine and Colon tallying two pins apiece. The 53-0 shellacking is the widest margin of victory for the Eagles since a 52-0 shutout over Wagner back on Feb. 10, 2007.
In the day's first round of matches, EMU kicked off the even with a 29-6 victory over Olivet. Germaine's major decision victory at 125 pounds and Colon's pin at 133 pounds spotted Eastern out to a 10-0 lead after two bouts.
Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) dropped his bout at 141, but with the help of teammates Phillips, Lester France (Flatrock, Mich.-Flatrock Community), J.T. Rice (Hilliard, Ohio-Hilliard Davidson), Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) and Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn), the Eagles took the next five matches to all but put away Olivet. Junior heavyweight Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) then tallied a 3-2 victory to close out the match for EMU.
In the second round of matches, the Green and White put together its most complete victory of the season, upending Campbell in a match that featured five pins, a tech. fall and two forfeits towards a 53-0 rout. Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name), Hoballah and David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek), each scored first period pins with Sulzer's taking a mere 1:24 at 157 pounds.
In the final round of the Wendy's Duals, the Eagles took on Gardner-Webb. In a match that was seemingly no closer than the rest, EMU tallied pins in three of its first five matches and never looked back on its way to a 43-3 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The sophomore Sulzer's second pin of the day took just 43 seconds to complete as he made it eight wins in his last 10 tries and pushed his team lead in wins to 13.
EMU seeks to increase its momentum during the final stretch of the non-conference season as it heads to Pennsylvania next weekend to take on two tough opponents in Edinboro and Clarion. The Eagles' match with Edinboro is slated for Saturday, Jan. 22, at 5 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. start against Clarion on Sunday, Jan. 23.
