The EMU wrestling squad dropped a difficult road dual to Edinboro, 24-12, Saturday, Jan. 22
EDINBORO, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) - It was a bittersweet homecoming for Eastern Michigan University Head Wrestling Coach Derek DelPorto, who hails from nearby Erie, Pa., as the Eagles dropped a tough road test to the host Fighting Scots of Edinboro University at McComb Fieldhouse, Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22.
A strong match-opening performance by EMU freshman 125-pounder, Jared Germaine, saw the Eagles get out to an early 6-0 lead after he recorded a victory by fall over Bijan Banks in 1:52, but the Fighting Scots fought back and cruised to a 24-12 dual win over the Eagles. DelPorto's counterpart, Tim Flynn, earned his 150th career victory as head man for Edinboro in the process.
Edinboro responded with two decision victories at 133 and 141 pounds before 17th-ranked Torsten Gillespie tallied a 12-1 major decision win over EMU's Corey Phillips to stretch the Fighting Scot lead to 10-6.
Sophomore Aaron Sulzer was then bested narrowly by Johnny Greisheimer to push the Eagle deficit to 13-6. Senior Nick Hendrick rose above the .500 mark for the season with a 7-6 decision win over Ethan Saylor at 165 pounds. He is now 11-10 on the season.
174-pounder Chris Eggert looked to build momentum for the Eagles in his match against Chris Hrunka, but fell just short with a 5-4 loss to give Edinboro a commanding 16-9 lead.
Second-ranked Chris Honeycutt then secured a victory for the Fighting Scots with his tech. fall win over EMU's Khodor Hoballah in the 184-pound bout. Nick Whitenburg would take a disappointing loss at 197-lbs. before David Wade ended the match with a successful 4-0 decision over Ernest James.
Wade won his fifth straight match and improves his overall record to 11-6 on the season.
The Eagles won't have much time to dwell on today as they make the 90-minute trip south to take on Clarion University in an afternoon matinee, tomorrow, Jan. 23. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and will be radio streamed live via the Clarion athletics website, clariongoldeneagles.com.
