A LOOK AHEAD: Head Coach Derek DelPorto and the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team hit the road for a pair of non-conference duals against 27th-ranked Edinboro and Clarion this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 22-23.
LAST TIME OUT: The EMU grapplers took all three duals in dominating fashion by outscoring its opponents by a combined score of 125-9 at the Wendy's Duals hosted by Ashland University last Saturday, Jan. 15. The Eagles topped Olivet, 29-6, Campbell, 53-0, and Gardner-Webb, 43-3, to move to 7-5 on the season overall.
In an effort to give starters some rest, Coach DelPorto gave others the opportunity to see some action on the mat. Lester France (157), J.T. Rice (165) and Alex Ortman (174/184) each turned in victories while several others also got some needed action.
“It's nice to have the depth at some weight classes in order for us to give our starters some rest and allow others to wrestle,” DelPorto said. “This is probably the first year since I have been here as a coach that we have the luxury of doing that.
“I was very happy about all the bonus-point victories we accomplished. We had a great week of practice and I was glad to see everyone wrestle well.”
EMU tallied 14 bonus-point victories in all on the day with a string of four consecutive such bouts in its win over Campbell.
KEYSTONE STATE OF MIND: The Eagles are headed to Western Pennsylvania for a challenging road trip that features back-to-back dual meets against Edinboro and Clarion, Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 22 and 23, respectively. EMU will do battle with 27th-ranked Edinboro Saturday at 4 p.m. before making the 90-minute trip to Clarion for a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.
EMU is looking to avenge losses to each school its last time out including a 19-13 loss at home to Clarion last season.
“I'm excited to wrestle both these teams for a couple of reasons.Edinboro is only 10 minutes from my home town of Erie, Pa. and we have to avenge losses to both these teams,” DelPorto said.
“On paper, both duals are going to be tight. We have to win the close matches in order for us to win these duals, which has been the case for several of our losses this season. “We are hoping to be on the winning end of those matches this time.”
HOMECOMING FOR DELPORTO: Head Coach Derek DelPorto will be making his fifth trip in as many years to his native state of Pennsylvania since he took over as EMU head coach in 2006-07.
DelPorto was raised in Erie, Pa. and attended school at Slippery Rock where he was an All-American wrestler. After competing collegiately, he returned to coach at his alma mater for two seasons before coming to Eastern Michigan. DelPorto is 6-3 all-time in the Keystone State as head man at EMU and went 3-1 a year ago.
