The EMU wrestling team salvaged a split of its Pennsylvania road trip by defeating Clarion, 33-10, on Sunday

CLARION, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team built a big lead early and never looked back as it defeated Clarion University, 33-10, in a non-conference road dual at W.S. Tippin Gymnasium, Sunday, January 23. The win avenged a home loss to the Golden Eagles at the Convocation Center a year ago.

Filiberto Colon, Aaron Sulzer and David Wade each earned wins by fall for the Eagles en route to the lopsided victory. EMU improves its record to 8-6 on the season overall while Clarion drops to 3-4.

In the opening match at 125-lbs., freshman Jared Germaine recorded four takedowns on his way to a decisive 10-5 win over Trey Hicks. The junior, Colon, followed that win up with one of his own as he tallied his 11th win by fall of the season, pinning Tom Gowing in just 3:25.

Freshman Mike LeHolm made it three straight victories to open the dual as he built up a 5-2 lead before winning in a second period injury default to make it 15-0, EMU.

Junior Corey Phillips came up shy at 149-lbs. when Clarion's Anthony White claimed a 10-7 decision. However, sophomore Aaron Sulzer, who was honored as Mid-American Conference Athlete of the Week last week, gained back momentum for the Eagles as he pinned his opponent, Kyle Braddock, in 2:55 to win his bout at 157-lbs.

With EMU leading, 21-3, Clarion's Bekzod Abdurakhmonov tightened the gap with a major decision victory over EMU's Nick Hendrick at 165-lbs. to cut the deficit to 21-7. Chris Eggert then answered back to defeat Scott Joseph by a slim, 4-1, decision at 174-lbs. to grow the Eastern lead to 24-7.

EMU then closed out the dual with wins in two of its last three bouts after freshman Khodor Hoballah recorded a 7-2 decision and senior David Wade tallied a fall in 6:20.

The Eagles finish their Pennsylvania road trip with a split after falling to Edinboro, 24-12, on Saturday. The Green and White will be back in action next weekend as it hosts the Eastern Duals, its first home meet since Dec. 3, when it defeated Cleveland State handily.

The Eastern Duals will include Tiffin and SIU-Edwardsville at Bowen Field House Saturday, Jan. 29. Competition is slated to begin at Noon.
