A LOOK AHEAD: The Eastern Michigan Eagles will head south to Ashland, Ohio to compete in the 22nd Annual Wendy's Duals hosted by Ashland University Saturday, Jan. 15. There, the Eagles will take on Olivet College, Gardner-Webb and Campbell.

LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles split a pair of dual matches agaisnt Lock Haven and Michigan State. A third match was canceled when Mott Community College experience bus trouble and was unable to make it to the event.
The Eagles won eight bouts to defeat Lock Haven and closed out the match in a fury of three straight pins by Khodor HOballah, Nick Whitenburg and David Wade. A disappointing loss to host MSU closed out the day as the Eagles fell by a narrow, 19-15, decision. Wade defeated 16th-ranked Mike McClure while one point losses by Jared Germaine and Nick Whitenburg could have swung the match with a different result.
“Either one of those matches goes our way, we probably win the dual,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “We knew going in those two matches were swing matches in the overall results.
“Overall, we wrestled well, but obviously not well enough to win. Every year we are getting better and teams are recognizing that. Looking back at the history of the EMU vs MSU Duals, we are getting really close.”

WEEKEND BASH AT ASHLAND: EMU should have a favorable opportunity to snag victories in each of their duals this weekend at the Wendy's Duals in Ashland, Ohio this Saturday, Jan. 15. This weekend will mark the first battle of Eagles between EMU and Ashland, but the Green and White has enjoyed recent success against its other two counterparts.
EMU defeated Gardner-Webb, 38-6, in their most recent meeting on the road back on Jan. 31, 2009, while more recently dispatching Olivet, 32-6, on Jan. 10, 2010. Here's this weekend's schedule:

WADE SHIFTING GEARS: After a slow start to the season, returning NCAA qualifier senior David Wade appears to have finally turned the corner after winning two matches at the Spartan Duals including a victory over 16th-ranked Mike McClure of MSU.
“David Wade can compete and beat any heavyweight in the country if he is at his best,” Coach DelPorto said. “I know that is a bold statement, but I wrestle him every week and I see and feel what he's capable of. Once he can compete at a consistent level, he will be hard to beat. I hope the corner is turned!”

SUPER SOPHOMORE: Aaron Sulzer has won six of his last eight matches and leads the Eagles with 11 wins on the season. The Cleveland, Ohio native joined senior David Wade as the lone Eagles to go 2-0 at last weekend's Spartan Duals. Sulzer defeated Lock Haven's Seth Creasy and Michigan State's Collin Dozier in leading the Eagles to a weekend split.

THE CAPTAIN'S CLUB: Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the captains for the 2010-11 squad. As chosen by their peers, senior heavyweight David Wade - who is coming off a season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships - headlines the five-member group. Redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, sophomore Aaron Sulzer and juniors J.J. Johnson and Corey Phillips round out this year's captains for the Eagles.

EMU RANKED 20TH-NATIONALLY IN APR RANKINGS: Eastern Michigan University's wrestling program is tied with Pittsburgh and Princeton in the annual Academic Performance Ratings (APR) as released by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine's June Issue. It's a new program-best for the Eagle grapplers. EMU ranks ahead of all Mid-American Conference institutions in the highly-regarded poll including Northern Illinois (29th), Buffalo (44th), Kent State (47th), Central Michigan (60th) and Ohio (67th).
