YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will open the New Year by heading to East Lansing for the Second Annual Spartan Duals this weekend. The Eagles will take on Mott CC at 11 a.m., Lock Haven at 1 p.m. and host Michigan State at 3 p.m. at Jenison Field House this Saturday, Jan. 8.

A LOOK AHEAD: The Eastern Michigan Eagles are headed to the Spartan Duals this Saturday, Jan. 8, to take on Mott Community College, Lock Haven and host Michigan State. Head Coach Derek DelPorto's squad hopes that the new year rejuvenates the squad, and as they get healthier, can also gain some momentum into Mid-American Conference action which is just a month away.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles sent 10 wrestlers to the prestigious Midlands Championships Dec. 28-29. The 48th annual two-day tournament brought some of the top wrestlers in the nation to Evanston, Ill., in what is often considered a precursor to the NCAA Tournament in March.
“The Midlands was as tough as it has been for years,” DelPorto said. “The level of competition probably made it the toughest tournament of the year so far. Having said that, we wrestled tough, but not well enough to place in such a deep field.“
Leading the way for EMU was sophomore Aaron Sulzer, the only Eagle to advance to day two to compete in the medal round. He finished the tournament with a 3-2 overall record.
“Aaron Sulzer lost in the medal round and was one match away from placing. He was certainly the better wrestler in the match he lost, but he got caught in a scramble and pinned, DelPorto said. “That was the first time I have ever seen Aaron pinned in 3 years. He will beat that guy the next time they wrestle.”
DUALS AT SPARTY: EMU will once again venture north to East Lansing to take part in the Spartan Duals this Saturday, Jan. 8. It will be the second trip to Michigan State this season after competing in the MSU Open back on Nov. 13, where Filiberto Colon and Mike LeHolm each placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
This weekend the Eagles will do battle with three schools including host Michigan State, which they have seen several times in opens and tournaments already this season.
“We have already seen Michigan State four times so we have a pretty good idea what they bring to the mat,” DelPorto said. “We have information on the other teams and will be studying film this week to prepare for them.”
Schedule:
Round 1 (11:00 AM)
* Mat 1: Michigan State vs. Lock Haven
* Mat 2: Eastern Michigan vs. Mott CC
* Mat 3: Olivet vs. Oakland University
Round 2 (1:00 PM)
* Mat 1: Michigan State vs. Oakland University
* Mat 2: Lock Haven vs. Eastern Michigan
* Mat 3: Olivet vs. Mott CC
Round 3 (3:00 PM)
* Mat 1: Michigan State vs. Eastern Michigan
* Mat 2: Lock Haven vs. Olivet
* Mat 3: Oakland University vs. Mott CC
SEEKING A HEALTHY 2011 NEW YEAR: The Eagles began their dual season with a 3-1 record with wins against Harvard, Sacred Heart and Cleveland State. They enter the new year with a 3-4 mark having already done battle with a trio of ranked opponents.
Health has been an issue as Head Coach Derek DelPorto has been forced to use several different starting lineup combinations so far this season. Getting his guys healthy again is a top priority for his young and vibrant group as they still have a difficult road ahead with challenging non-conference duals and still the ever competitive Mid-American Conference slate still to come.
“2011 is going to be very challenging in keeping everyone healthy and ready to compete at the highest level, DelPorto said. “We have been pretty unlucky so far with our injuries so we are hoping the New Year brings us good health!”
