EMU Readies for Oakland, Detroit

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan women's tennis team is set to open its home season at the Chippewa Racquet Club, Saturday, Jan. 29 as it squares off against both the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland University and the Titans of the University of Detroit. The match against Detroit will take place at 1 p.m., while the match against Oakland will get underway at 8:30 p.m.
» 2011 SEASON KICKS OFF: The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team kicked off its 34th season, Friday, Jan. 14, as it traveled to Huntington, West Va. to play Marshall. The team dropped the match, 6-1, but regrouped to earn a 7-0 win against Morehead State the following day on Marshall's neutral court. The team's first season of women's intercollegiate tennis at EMU was 1976-77 under the direction of Lucy Parker. The Eagles went 8-7 that season and finished fifth at the Michigan AIAW Championship.
» WHAT'S ON TAP: The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team welcomes in the University of Detroit and Oakland University for back-to-back home matches, Friday, Jan. 29, starting at 1 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
» SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: The Oakland University Golden Grizzlies will play their first match of the 2011 season when the team faces off against EMU, while the University of Detroit Mercy is coming off it's first match of the season, a Jan. 23, 7-0 loss to Michigan State. Amanda Cornwell, Elena Strakhova and Erin Weldon each pushed their MSU counterpart to a full three-set match.
» THE SERIES: The Eagles are undefeated in action against both the Titans and the Golden Grizz, compiling a combined 11-0 record
» RAY RETURNS FOR A FIFTH: Head coach Ryan Ray returns for his fifth season as the women's tennis coach. In four seasons, he's led his women to an overall mark of 34-54 (13-19, MAC). His best overall finish at Eastern was his first year at the helm, 2006-07, when his team finished 12-11.
» FAMILIAR FACES: The EMU women's tennis team returns six players to a young squad. Xu Chang is the lone senior on the roster, while juniors Karina Ahuja, Marcela Rivero and Miriam Westerink are returning for their third year of action. Georgia de'Liske-Tarr, a transfer student who sat out the entire 2008-09 season, but still practiced with the team, became eligible to play as of January prior to the start of the winter 2010 campaign. She will also have junior eligibility. Celine Donnet is the only sophomore on the team, while newly acquired Mariya Tonchava and Nino Mebuke round out the roster.
» FINDING TALENT ABROAD: None of the eight student-athletes on the women's tennis team were born in the United States. The ladies hail from eight different home countries. Karina Ahuja is from India. Nino Mebuke hails from Tbilisi, Georgia, Xu Chang comes from China and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr hails from the Great Down Under. Celine Donnet and Miriam Westerink are from the neighboring countries, Belgium and The Netherlands, while Mariya Toncheva is from Bulgaria, and Marcela Rivero comes from the landlocked country of Bolivia.
