Swimming and Diving To Square Off With Bulls This Saturday

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Both the Eastern Michigan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to the friendly confines of Jones Natatorium this Saturday, Jan. 22 as they host the Bulls of the University at Buffalo. The meet is slated to kick off at 1 p.m.
RUNNING WITH THE BULLS: Saturday will mark the 13th meeting between Eastern Michigan and Buffalo for both the men's and women's teams. Both squads first met in the 1998-99 season where the Eagles upended the Bulls by scores of 167-76 (men's) and 176-121 (women's). In EMU's history, the Eagles hold a staggering advantage over UB, with the men's program sitting at a perfect 12-0 all time in the series, while the women hold a dominant 11-1 mark against the Bulls.
SCOUTING THE BULLS: The University at Buffalo men's team recently broke a school diving record on the one meter boards when Colin Patrican recorded a six-dive total of 346.42 to surpass the previous record mark of 344.79. At the Zippy Invite, the men took first place over Xavier where they set a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:03.88. At that same invitational, the women's program took third out of 12 teams, led by championship finalists in the 200-yard breaststroke, Alie Schirmers, who took second in the A final in 2:21.90, and Brynn Marecki, who placed fifth in 2:24.65.
LAST TIME OUT: On the women's side, the Green and White picked up their first win of the 2010-11 season in defeating Mid-American Conference opponent, Bowling Green State University, last Friday with a 158-136 decision over the Falcons. Sophomore Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge) led the Green and White with four victories on the day. Senior Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) won the 50 freestyle and would later outpace BGSU's Emily Bennet in the 100 free for her second victory of the evening. Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich-Dow) highlighted the backstroke events for EMU with a first place performance in the 100 back and recorded a runner up finish in the 200 backstroke. Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) swept both the one and three-meter dives for the Eagles, recording scores of 314.62 and 302.03, respectively. The men headed to Ann Arbor where they dropped a non-conference meet to the No. 13 ranked University of Michigan, 141-98. Andrew Saunders (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Halifax West) was the lone Eagle to record a first place finish, taking two wins on the boards in both the one and three-meter dives. Jacob Hanson (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) added two second-place performances on the afternoon in both the 200 individual medley and 200 backstroke. In the 100 freestyle, the Eagles swept 2-3-4 with Matt Zavislak (Commerce Twp., Mich.-Walled LakeNorthern) leading the way with a 46.99, second place showing. August Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) followed in second after touching the wall, and freshman Dexter Foos (Fremont, Ohio-Fremont-Ross) came in third.
EMIG NAMED SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: For the first time in her young collegiate career, sophomore Briana Emig was named Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week by the MAC office on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Emig helped the Eagles to a 158-136 conference victory over Bowling Green last Friday, Jan. 14 with four first place finishes - three of which landed in the top ten in the conference. She was first to complete the 1,000 freestyle in 10:25.11 to set the ninth best mark in the MAC, and her 5:01.54, first place finish in the 500 freestyle was good for eighth best in the conference. In the 200 freestyle, Emig was first to touch the wall in 1:53.66, and would later go on and anchor the winning 400 freestyle relay that posted the tenth best conference time of 3:33.74.
