Volleyball Marches to 5-0 with a Sweep of Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team stretched its winning streak to five straight with a three-set sweep of Bucknell University, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18, at the here Friday night, Sept. 3, at the Bucknell Invitational at Davis Gym. Sophomore Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) recorded a team-best nine kills on just 16 swings, while three other Eagles finished the night with seven kills apiece.
The Eagles' perfect 5-0 start marks the seventh time program has been undefeated through five matches and its first since the 2005 campaign. Additionally, with the victory the Green and White equaled its entire 2009 win total. Meanwhile, the Bison of Bucknell dropped to 0-4 on the young season
Youth continued to be served for the Eagles behind Baker, as sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich. -Dearborn Divine Child) along with freshmen Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) each finished with seven put-a-ways. Senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.- Westland John Glenn) finished with four blocks and three kills and junior Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) laid out for 13 digs on the night.
BU was paced by Heidi Kamp with five kills and five total blocks as the Bison struggled offensively finishing with a hitting percentage of -.033 (18-21-90).
Each set followed similar trends as the Bison stayed within a few points of the Eagles (5-0) for much of play before falling behind late. Bucknell even had six-point leads early in the first and third sets but struggled to curb Eastern Michigan's lengthy runs down the stretch.
The Eagles wrap up action at the Bucknell Invitational Saturday, Sept. 4, with a pair of matches Iona and Providence.
