YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A season-high four-goal outburst highlighted by Stephanie Clarke's (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) first two career goals helped the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team to a, 4-1, Mid-American Conference victory over the Akron Zips at Scicluna Field Sunday, Sept. 26.
The Eagles scored twice in each half and Clarke tallied two goals and an assist as the EMU remained unbeaten in conference play. With the win, Eastern Michigan moves to 4-5-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the MAC while Akron falls to 2-7 (0-2 MAC).
The Eagles struck first on Maggie Christensen's (Orland Park, Ill.-AA Stagg) third goal of the season, taking a well-struck through ball from Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-North) and putting it past Akron goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert in the match's fourth minute.
The Zips followed up 10 minutes later with the equalizer as Rachel Phillip blasted one into the upper left corner of the goal, her first goal of the season. From then on, EMU keeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) was impenetrable as she made seven saves en route to the win.
The Eagles next best scoring chance came just before halftime when freshman Julie Maheu (Oakville, Ontario-Holy Trinity) found space inside the box, but prior to getting a shot off she was tackled from behind, giving EMU a penalty shot. Clarke then stepped up and scorched the PK into the back of the net, her first career goal, to give the Green and White back the lead in the 29th minute.
The Eagles added an insurance tally in the 56th minute when Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) came off the bench to add her third goal of the season. Following a close range try by Detrick, Sheridan charged hard inside the six-yard box and put it home. Clarke added her first career assist on the play as well.
Clarke then added one more for good measure as she snuck behind the defense to head home her second score of the game. As the keeper was coming out to secure the ball at the top of the box, her teammate unintentionally misdirected the flight of the ball allowing Clarke to head home the score into an empty net. The freshman nearly recorded a hat trick as she found herself one-on-one with the keeper later on, but Wolbert made the diving save.
The Eagles will be back in action Friday, Oct. 1, when they host Bowling Green to close out a three-game homestand. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
