YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Both teams combined to score nine second half goals and 10 different players reached the scoring column as the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team outlasted Bowling Green State University, 6-4, in a wild Mid-American Conference cross-divisional shootout at Scicluna Field, Friday, Oct. 1.
The Eagles never trailed in the match that set the EMU all-time record for most goals combined and fell just two goals shy of the mark for goals scored at home by an EMU squad. With the win, Eastern Michigan evens its record to 5-5-2 overall, 2-0-1 in the MAC, while BGSU falls to 4-7-1 (2-1 MAC).
Freshman Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) picked up right where she left off by scoring her third goal of the season and the match's lone goal of the first half. Clarke took the ball off a bounce and turned it into a beautiful full-volley from 15 yards out, striking it across her body and inside the far left post. She would add three assists in the match as well, giving her 10 points in the last two games after tallying two goals and an assist in EMU's previous match.
After a relatively subdued first half of action, both sides combined to score four goals in a span of just 10 minutes. EMU senior Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) made her presence felt once again after missing the previous two games due to injury. The senior hammered home a rebound off a corner kick just a minute and a half into the second period to give EMU a 2-0 lead.
As soon as the lead felt safe, Bowling Green mounted a valiant comeback, scoring twice in a span of 1:51 as Katie Stephenson and Madeline Wideman each connected off deflections inside the box.
Then, in the 57th minute, the Eagles regained the lead again with a 20-yard strike by Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy).
The scoring continued as Chelsea Detrick (Grosse Pointe, Mich.-North) joined the party with her second goal of the season, chipping in a volley off a marvelous feed pass by Sheridan in the 69th minute to give EMU a, 4-2, lead.
But as soon as another Eastern Michigan lead felt comfortable, Tracy Togba pulls the Falcons to within a goal after cleaning up a rebound inside the box. EMU's Julie Kaim would give her side another two-goal cushion by converting a Clarke corner kick for her first goal of the season.
BGSU's Alyssa Zuccaro entered the match with a team-high six goals and coming off her first career hat trick in a 4-0 win over Buffalo in her previous match. The junior wasn't about to be left out of the scoring column and she wasn't, adding her seventh goal of the season and making it a 5-4 match in the 83rd minute while instilling hope for her squad with seemingly plenty of time left.
But then EMU senior Maggie Christensen (Orland Park, Ill.-AA Stagg) put that hope to rest, using a nice through-ball by Janssens and adding the final tally to a 6-4 shootout in the 88th minute.
The Falcons outshot the Eagles, 17-16, and won the corner kick battle, 8-7. Filling in for the injured, Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair), freshman Elena Mudrak (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia) made four key saves for her first career victory in her first career start for Eastern Michigan.
The Eagles will take its unblemished conference ledger to Oxford, Ohio to take on Miami in a cross-division clash, Sunday, Oct. 3. The game is slated for 1 p.m. at the Miami Soccer Complex.
