Eagles to resume play Saturday, Sept. 25

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team won seven matches on the opening day of the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., Friday, Sept. 24.

Despite starting the day out with a loss to Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green State University in doubles play, the Eagles bounced back with a 9-7 win by duo Celine Donnet and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr over a University of Toledo pair.

The momentum spilled over into singles play for freshman Nino Mebuke as she defeated Detroit's Amanda Cornwell (6-3, 6-1) in the opening round, and Marquette's Gillian Hush in a come-from-behind thriller (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) in the opening round quarterfinals.

Marcela Rivero followed up with an opening round victory of her own in a three set, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, win and teammate Celine Donnet strung together consecutive victories to also advance to the semifinals.

de'Lisle-Tarr rounded out the first day for EMU as she notched a win over Michigan State's Jennifer Yen, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, in the consolation match.

“Overall we did ok, but we are capable of much better,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “Our doubles intensity was very low and it showed in the results. Our singles play was alright, but certainly not to our potential. I was happy to see Nino and Celine advance to Semifinals tomorrow and we will work on starting the morning tomorrow with better doubles intensity.”

The Eagles will resume competition Saturday, Sept. 25, for day two of the Spartan Invite.
