Eagles closing in on a strong finish in the three-day tournament

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Day two of the Spartan Invitational proved to be a successful one for the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team as the Eagles earned eight victories Saturday, Sept. 25, in East Lansing, Mich.

EMU came out strong on day two, with the duo of Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke taking both of the consolation quarterfinal over a Michigan State pair, and the consolidation semifinal over a Louisville team, with both matches ending 8-4. Celine Donnet and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr also won quarterfinals and semifinals doubles matches, notching 8-5 victories over California University of Pennsylvania and Bowling Green State University.

Mebuke carried over the doubles momentum into singles competition as she scored a victory in the Draw B semis against Michigan State's Marina Bohrer in straight sets (7-5, 6-3). Newcomer Mariya Toncheva defeated Detroit's Raina Halabi, 6-0, 6-3, also.

“We really emphasized the necessity for more intensity in doubles and the ladies really responded well today,” said EMU Head Coach Ryan Ray. “As you get late into these tournaments everyone is tired and not feeling their best. The ones that can block that out succeed and we did a pretty good job of that. We look forward to playing in two finals tomorrow along with all the other matches.”

The Eagles will wrap up the tournament Sunday, Sept. 26.
