Trio adds depth and talent to a young roster in Ypsilanti

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Ryan Kucera, head coach of the Eastern Michigan University tennis program, announced today, June 20, the additions of Pehal Kharadkar, Matilde Parreira, and Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya after the trio signed Athletic Financial Aid Agreements to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Eagles. All three newcomers will join the program ahead of the start of the 2025 fall season.

"We are thrilled to welcome an outstanding incoming class to our program," Kucera said. "This group brings not only immense talent and competitiveness on the court, but also the character, humility, and drive we value deeply. Each of these five young women embodies the culture we've worked hard to build, and we're confident they'll seamlessly join our incredible returning group to create a unified, motivated, and formidable team. I've never been more excited about the future of Eastern Michigan Tennis!"

The three newest additions to the roster will join previously announced signees Kenzy Elhamrawy (Alexandria, Egypt/Girard) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos), who inked their AFA agreements with the program in December 2024.

Khardkar (Indore, India/Daly College Indore) brings a strong resume to Ypsilanti as she found success on the ITF Junior circuit. With a career-high ranking of No. 1,014 in the ITF Juniors, she has reached the semifinals once and the quarterfinals twice in single tournaments while advancing to the finals twice in doubles to go along with one semifinal and three quarterfinal appearances. Khardkar, who holds a career-high UTF of 8.61, has held high rankings in the All India Tennis Association lists throughout her playing career, including best of No. 31 for U12, No. 7 for U14, No. 44 of U16, and No. 92 for U18.

"Pehal is a true Eagle, both as a player and a person," Kucera stated. "She possesses weapons in all areas of her game. She hits a huge ball from the baseline and is skilled at the net. Her game is brimming with potential. More importantly though, Pehal loves the game and has a passion to push herself. Off the court, she exudes that same enthusiasm and positive attitude. She will thrive in this environment and will fit in seamlessly with our team."

Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes Vieria) has put together a solid prep career that saw her reach the finals of numerous tournaments at the national and international level. In singles play, she has climbed to as high as No. 1,383 in the WTA rankings while sporting a best of 1,787 in the ITF Junior rankings. The top junior in Portugal, Parreira claimed the U18 and Senior division singles titles at the regional championship tournament before advancing to the semifinals in singles. Additionally at the national level, she was a doubles finalist at both the U16 and U18 events while capturing the national crown in mixed doubles as a U16 and runner up as a U18. She reached the finals of two ITF doubles events, including the ITF J60 Porto and ITF J30 Setúbal while reaching the semifinals in singles at the ITF J30 Viamoura event as well.

"Matilde is an exciting addition to our program," Kucera said. "Her passion for tennis was evident from my first conversation with her and her play reflects that. She is a dynamic athlete with a diverse set of racket skills. She has been playing at the top levels of international tennis and earned a professional ranking for herself. Her high energy will be a welcome addition to our culture. We are excited to bring her here, continue to develop her diverse skill set and watch her flourish."

Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya (Serang, Indonesia/SMAN 2 Kota Serang) has proven herself to be one of the top players in Indonesia as she currently (June 16-22) is representing her nation at the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaysia as her team is set to play in the Group II Asia/Oceania playoff semifinals on June 21 against Malaysia after posting a 4-0 record in group play. The top ranked junior in Indonesia at both the U16 and U18 levels, Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya has captured four ITF Junior singles crowns and reached the finals in one other event while also capturing a pair of doubles titles. She currently stands at No. 536 in the ITF Junior rankings and holds a UTF of 9.11.

"Cylova is a very high achieving young person both on and off the court," Kucera stated. "Her tennis game is fun to watch, she is an excellent mover, and pairs that with strong shot production. She is the top ranked junior player in Indonesia and has proudly represented her country. Off the court, she is a thoughtful and kind person who will contribute to our culture positively. We can't wait to have her grow and accomplish great things in our program."

All five signees, along with a strong core of returning players, will meet on campus for the start of the fall semester starting August 25. The season schedule, including the fall slate that will begin in September, will be announced this summer.
