YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- For the first time in the 2010 campaign, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team takes the floor at the Convocation Center. The Eagles will host Youngstown State University Tuesday, Sept. 21, in a non-conference affair before opening Mid-American Conference play Thursday, Sept. 23, versus instate rival Central Michigan University. EMU closes out the week Saturday, Sept. 25, against Kent State University. First serve for all three matches is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Tuesday and Thursday's match will be video streamed on Eagle All-Access. Veteran broadcaster Chad Bush will call the action beginning at 6:50 p.m.
BATTLE OF THE BIRDS AT THE CONVO: The Eagles and Penguins are squaring off for the third time with Eastern Michigan holding a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series. The meeting will be the first since 1998, when Eastern posted a 3-1victory at venerable Bowen Field House, Oct. 4. EMU won the only other meeting, a 3-0 sweep at the University at Buffalo Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y., Aug. 30, 1996.
EAGLES AND CHIPPEWAS OPEN MAC PLAY THURSDAY: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team turns its attention towards another West Division title Thursday, Sept. 23, when it opens Mid-American Conference play against Central Michigan University. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The Green and White have won 10 of the last 12 in conference lid-lifters dating back to a three-set victory over Central Michigan, Sept. 23, 1998. Thursday's matchup also marks the fifth time that Eagles will play the Chippewas to open conference play. The last time the teams met in the MAC opener was just last season, when CMU defeated EMU, 3-2, Sept. 25, 2009, at the Rose Center in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
EAGLES AND CHIPPEWAS RENEW RIVALRY: In-state rivals EMU and CMU are hooking up for the 71st meeting in the all-time series. Central Michigan holds a 51-19 edge in the series, including winning two-of-three in last year's season series.
EAGLES AND GOLDEN FLASHES BATTLE SATURDAY: Following Thursday's match the Eagles remain at home for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday, Sept. 25, versus the Golden Flashes of Kent State University. EMU and KSU are hooking up for the 48th meeting in the all-time series. The Eagles hold a 30-16-1 edge in the series, including winning eight of the last 10 meetings dating back to the 2001 season. Last year, the Golden Flashes notched a 3-0 win at the M.A.C. Center, Sept. 26, 2009.
OFF TO A SIZZLING START: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team is off to a sensational start to the 2010 campaign with an 11-3 record, that includes winning 36 of its 50 sets played. The Eagles are off to their best start since the 2003 campaign.
YOUTH MOVEMENT: Head Coach Kim Berrington has relied heavily on underclassmen with freshmen and sophomores accounting for 73.9 percent of the squad's kills, 63.6 percent of its blocks and 70.2 percent of its points.
KEEP 'EM DOWN: Only eight teams have hit better than .100 against the Eagles this season and only three teams have hit better than .200. Eastern Michigan ranks second in the Mid-American Conference with an opponent hitting percentage of .125. Junior Ashley Mason ranks third in the MAC with 10.62 assists per set and junior Haley Stein is third with 4.94 digs per set. Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello ranks third with 3.77 kills per set and third in points at 4.35.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Green and White have enjoyed the friendly confines of the EMU Convocation Center over the past nine seasons, posting a 64-34 mark in the “Nest,” including two home victories last season.
IT'S A LONG ROAD: Eastern Michigan started off the 2010 season playing its first 14 matches on the road. The Eagles traveled over 4,846 miles round-trip in its first four weekends. Eastern opened the season at the 35th Annual Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational, Sept. 27-28, and then travel to Lewisburg, Pa., Sept. 3-4, for the Bucknell Tournament. From there, Eastern played at Oakland University, Sept. 7, before heading north to the Michigan State Tournament, Sept. 10-11. The Green and White jetted south to the Davidson Invitational in Davidson, N.C., Sept. 17-18, before returning to the Convocation Center to tip off the home season, Sept. 21, versus Youngstown State.
