YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team made quick work of the visiting Youngstown State University Penguins in the Eagles' 2010 home opener at the Convocation Center, Tuesday, Sept. 21, winning the match in three sets, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-10.

With the win the Eagles advance to 12-3 while the Penguins drop to 2-12.

Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles offense by successfully converting 12-of-36 attacks for a .342 hitting percentage. Iaquaniello nearly out-hit the Penguins by herself as YSU racked up only 17 kills in the three sets combined.

Behind Iaquaniello were Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) each with nine kills, and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) with eight kills. Roback also paced the Eagles defensively with 13 digs, while junior libero Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic Central) chipped in with 12 digs, and short also had 10. Sophomore Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) led the Eagles with 30 assists

The Eagles only trailed for six serves of the entire match, mounting impressive leads in each set. In the first set, the Eagles stormed ahead 12-4 and never let Youngstown get any closer before a Baker kill closed the set.

The Penguins kept the second set closer, even taking the lead (9-8) on a handling error by Mason. The Eagles quickly closed the gap, however, regaining the lead, 13-12, as Mason assisted on an Iaquaniello kill.

Eastern led wire-to-wire in the third set, hopping out to an 11-3 lead on the strength of eight consecutive points scored on Iaquaniello serves. EMU ultimately closed out the set with a 25-10 victory.

The Penguins were led by Tasha Reid as she racked up six kills and a .267 kill percentage, and junior defensive specialist Brianna Kerns as she tallied nine digs.

The Eagles will open up Mid-American Conference play this Thursday, Sept. 23, when the team takes on in-state rivals Central Michigan at the Convocation Center. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
