YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team fell behind early and could not make up the difference in a 52-14 loss to a visiting Central Michigan University team here in a Mid-American Conference West Division game Saturday, Sept. 18, in Rynearson Stadium.
EMU, now 0-3 overall and 0-2 in MAC action, was led by senior tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Military Academy) who carried the ball 16 times for 49 yards with one touchdown run. The quarterbacking duties were shared by Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde), who led the Eagles with 148 yards through the air on 12-of-20 passing, and Devontae Payne (Cleveland, Ohio-South), who completed 13-of-24 passes for 134 yards.
CMU, now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in MAC play, was led by junior tailback Paris Cotton who gained 209 yards on 21 carries while scoring three touchdowns. CMU quarterback Ryan Radcliff completed 15-of-23 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns.
Both teams played tough defense in the early stages with Central Michigan managing to get on the board first on a 21-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Radcliff to wide receiver Cody Wilson with David Harman adding the PAT kick at the 4:03 mark of the first quarter.
The Chippewas came right back to take a 14-0 lead just under three minutes later when Paris Cotton ran 13 yards for a score with Harman once again adding the PAT with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Eastern cut that advantage to seven, 14-7, on a two-yard run by Priest and the PAT by sophomore transfer Sean Graham (Commerce Township, Mich.-Orchard Lake St. Mary's) at the 4:28 mark of the second quarter.
Central would finish the first-half scoring on a one-yard run by Cotton and the PAT by Harman to head into the lockerroom with a 21-7 lead.
The visitors would make it 28-7 in the early stages of the third quarter on a 61-yard touchdown burst by Cotton.
The Eagles fought right back to make it 28-14 with 8:09 left in the third on a short pass from Gilette to a speeding Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) down the left sideline for a 52-yard touchdown.
The Chippewas would match that EMU score on a 14-yard touchdown strike from Radcliff to Kito Poblah for a 35-14 lead with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter.
The CMU defense would then come up with a score of its own, sending a blitz on Gillett that resulted in a 43-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Mike Petrucci for a 42-14 Chippewa advantage.
CMU would tag on a 41-yard field goal by Harman with 8:09 left in the contest for a 45-14 CMU lead. The Chips came right back with a 20-yard touchdown run by Zurion Tipton with 6:25 remaining to make it 52-14.
The going does not get any easier for the Eagles as they go out of the conference next Saturday, Sept. 25, to play at No. 2 ranked Ohio State in a 3:30 p.m. game set to be shown nationally on ABC.
