Volleyball Captures Comfort Suites Invitational Championship

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team claimed the title of the 35th Annual Comfort Suites Invitational with a pair of victories Saturday afternoon, Aug. 28, at Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State University. The Eagles were the only undefeated team in the tournament after sweeping the host Bearkats (25-15, 32-30, 25-15) and Marist College (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) on the final day.

The invitational title marks the first for EMU since 2008 when the squad took home the Bash in the Boro Championship, Sept. 12-13, in Statesboro, Ga.. During that weekend the Green and White defeated Charleston Southern (3-1), UNC Wilmington (3-0) and Georgia Southern (3-2).

Eastern Michigan improved to 4-0 on the young season and is perfect through four matches for the first-time since the 2005 campaign when the Green and White opened with a 5-0 mark.

Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) picked up right where she finished the 2009 campaign, powering home a team-best 54 kills and 68.0 points on the weekend. For her effort, the Plymouth, Mich. native as selected the tournament's MVP. On the weekend, Iaquaniello posted double-digit kills in every match, including a season-high 15 put-a-ways versus SHSU.

Junior setter Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) collected All-Tournament accolades, finishing with 168 set assists, 35 digs, nine total blocks, eight kills and six service aces in the 13 sets played. Mason's best match came in the season-opener against Prairie View, Aug. 28, posting 36 assists, nine digs, four blocks and three kills in a match that lasted just an hour.

Eastern Michigan looks to equal its entire win-total from 2009 Friday-Saturday, Sept. 3-4, at the Bucknell Tournament in Lewisburg, Pa. EMU takes on the host Bison, Sept. 3, followed by matches against Iona, Sept. 4, and Providence, Sept. 4.

In the morning contest, Eastern Michigan fought off a determined Sam Houston in a 62-point second set on the way to a 25-15 32-30 25-15 victory over the Bearkats.

Iaquaniello and freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) led EMU with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Carli Kolbe was the Kats' top scorer with 10 kills.

Down one set, Sam Houston had three chances to even the match at a set apiece serving with lead of 25-24 26-25 and 29-28 but the Eagles had an answer every time.

Sam Houston's front line came up with nine blocks with Kim Black taking part in six and Kelli Stewart four. EMU played almost error-free ball with only 18 miscues in 121 attempts for a .240 team hitting percentage on the way to victory.

EMU 3, Marist 0
Iaquaniello powered 14 kills in 28 attempts as the Eagles wrapped up the tournament title with a three-set win over Marist.

EMU totaled 46 kills in 99 attempts with only 16 errors for a .303 team hitting percentage. Marist, which finished fourth in the event with a 1-3 record, was led by Grace Hill with eight kills.
