Four Eagles reach double digits in kills as the team racks up 53 put-a-ways
Box score.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team rolled past the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 25-20), Friday afternoon, Aug. 28, at the 35th Annual Comfort Suites Invitational hosted by Sam Houston State University. Sophomores Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) and Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) paced the Eagle attack combining for 22 of the team's 53 kills, as the team improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Iaquaniello turned the 12th double-double of her career with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Baker recorded 11 kills and four total blocks. Also contributing for the Green and White were freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy), who picked up her first collegiate double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, and senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn), who recorded 10 kills. Junior setter Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) tallied 50 assists on the afternoon.
For ULL, Caroline Dufrene was the lone Ragin Cajun to reach double-figures in kills with 11 kills, she also added three digs and three block assists. Lindsay Brown led Louisiana-Lafayette with 28 digs.
The opening frame was back-and-fourth with EMU holding a slim 15-14 advantage following a Lesley Mirarchi kill at the midway point. However, that would be all the closer the Cajuns would get as the Eagles rolled off nine of the next 12 points to go up 24-17. Following an attack error by Swartz, ULL would return the favor with a miscue of its own to give EMU the 25-18 victory.
Game two would be much of the same with neither side able to pull away until the midway point. Trailing 8-7, Eastern Michigan would send junior Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) back to serve and she delivered by picking up seven consecutive points to go up 13-8. EMU continued to cruise taking the 25-14 decision.
The Ragin Cajun's hitting percentage came to life in the third stanza, boasting a .195 attack percentage (14-6-41) to just a .085 clip (13-9-47) for the Green and White in the 25-21 victory.
Eastern jumpped out to a commanding 10-3 lead out of the gate in the fourth set with six of the points coming via hitting errors by UL-Lafayette. But the Cajuns would not go quietly, pulling within three points, 18-15, off an wayward attack by the Eagles.
Again EMU would show the resiliency it lacked during the 2009 campaign, regrouping to take the set and the match with the 20-25 win.
