EMU OPENS 2010 SEASON IN TEXAS: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opens the 2010 season this weekend, Aug. 27-28, with four matches at the 35th Annual Comfort Suites Invitational hosted by Sam Houston State University. The Eagles open tournament play Friday, Aug. 27, against Prairie View at 9 a.m. followed by a 4:30 p.m. match versus Louisiana-Lafayette. EMU concludes the tournament Saturday, Aug. 28, when the team faces the host Bearkats at 11:30 a.m. followed by Marist at 4:30 p.m.. All matches will take place at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on the Huntsville, Texas campus.
THIRD EARLIEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY: The first serve between Eastern Michigan and Prairie View marks the third-earliest start to a campaign in program history. In 2007, the Eagles began play Aug. 27 against Charlotte in the 49er Invitational with a 3-2 victory in Charlotte, N.C. Just a season prior in 2006, the Green and White played the then-earliest opener on Aug. 25 against New Mexico State at the Sun Bowl Volleyball Invitational.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THE SHSU INVITATIONAL FIELD: The Eagles have never squared off with any of the teams in this weekend's tournament. In fact, Eastern has a very limited history against any the three school's conference affiliates (Prairie View – SWAC; UL-Lafayette – Sun Belt; Sam Houston State - Southland; Marist – MAAC).
EAGLES READY FOR 2010 CAMPAIGN: The Eagles return four starters from a predominately underclassmen-laden 2009 squad that finished in sixth place in the Mid-American Conference West Division. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello (3.17 kills per set, 2.20 digs per set) and sophomore Kristen Baker (1.77 kills and 0.71 blocks per set) will lead the way along with senior middle blocker Jennifer Swartz (2.36kills per set and 0.84 blocks per set). Junior Ashley Mason returns for her third year setting the table for the EMU offense, recording 8.77 assists per set.
The Eagles had their share of ups and downs during the 2009 season, posting a 5-28 overall mark and a 4-12 record in Mid-American Conference play. In the five victories, EMU recorded a .185 attack percentage to go along with 12.1 kills, 16.3 digs and 2.29 blocks per set. The opposition also posted just a .136 hitting percentage in those contests. On the other side of the ledger in the setbacks, Eastern Michigan managed just a .151 attack percentage and a drop to 11.3 kills, 15.4 digs and 1.7 blocks per set. The opponents also posted a much better attack percentage at .240.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Green and White have enjoyed the friendly confines of the EMU Convocation Center over the past nine seasons, posting a 64-34 mark in the “Nest,” including two home victories last season.
BERRINGTON'S 15TH SEASON AT EMU: Head Coach Kim Berrington is entering her 15th season as head coach of the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team.
The seventh coach in EMU history became its winningest coach, Sept. 20, 2003, as the Eagles posted a victory over East Carolina in the Coastal Carolina Tournament. The victory was Berrington's 110th win at the helm of the EMU program. In her tenure as head coach, Berrington has posted an overall record of 206-223 and a 105-130 mark in conference play.
In nine of the last 10 seasons, she has led the Eagles to the MAC Tournament, with the 1999 campaign marking the first time the squad has played in the postseason event since the 1990 season. Her teams have also led the MAC in digs in seven of the last 12 seasons, including ranking nationally in five of those campaigns.
