Volleyball Opens 2010 With a 3-0 Sweep

Eastern Michigan downs Prairie View 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-8)

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (EMUEagles.com) — Behind a 14 kills from sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child), the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team posted a 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-17, 25-8) over Prairie View A&M University Friday morning, Aug, 27, in the opening match of the 35th Annual Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational. The victory marked the first-time since the 2008 season that the Eagles have begun the campaign with a victory and the 10th-time in Head Coach Kim Berrington's 15 years at the helm.
With the victory the Eagles improve with 1-0, while the Panthers fall to 0-1 on the young season.
The Green and White were paced by Iaquaniello with 14 kills and a .522 attack percentage (14-2-23). Getting her first collegiate start, freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) notched a near double-double with seven kills and nine digs. Junior Ashley Mason (East Lake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) also turned in 36 assists, nine digs, and three kills for the Eagles.
For Prairie View, Sharonda Marshall recorded five kills and Jasmine Houston finished with four kills and two block assists.
The Eagles outhit the Panthers (.318 to -.024) and controlled the net (10.5 blocks to 4.0).
EMU won the opening set 25-15 behind a strong offensive attack Iaquaniello powered home six kills on just eight swings as the team hit .258 (12-4-31) for the frame . Things continued to roll in favor of the Green and White in the second stanza with the super-sophomore Iaquaniello again picking up a six kills to pace the attack.
In 2009 the Eagles has trouble closing out the opposition, but the Eagles took a stand in a major way that the 2010 campaign would be different. Eastern jumped out to a 16-1 advantage thanks enlarge part to eight unforced miscues by Prairie View. The rout continued for the Eagles as they closed out the set and the match with a service ace off the serve from sophomore Kaitlyn Vincek (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon).
Eastern Michigan returned to the court this afternoon, Aug. 27, with a 4:30 p.m. match versus Louisiana-Lafayette. The Eagles then take on host Sam Houston State and Marist Saturday, Aug. 28, at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
