– The Eastern Michigan University softball team settled for a loss and a tie, falling 7-5 in game one before drawing even, 7-7, in game two of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader against West Divisional foe, Western Michigan University, at Varsity Field Friday, May 7.

The Eagles held a lead in each game, but weren't able to secure a victory on their home turf. In game two, down 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Stacie Skodinski tied the game with her third home run of the season to send it to extra innings. The game was called due to torrential rain and lightning in the area, making it the first tie for EMU since 1996 when they recorded two in the same season, both of which were 4-4 ties to North Carolina and East Carolina.

Sarah Gerber went 3-for-7 combined on the afternoon, adding her ninth double of the season along with seven runs batted in to give her 26 on the season which is second on the team. Jessica Patterson went 4-for-6 on the day to raise her batting average to .333 while Jessica Richards finished 3-for-6 and scored three times.

In game one, the Broncos were the first to crack the scoring column with a run in the second inning with a bases loaded RBI single by Jenn Tschetter. Jessica Patterson was able to prevent added runs from scoring, but the bases remained loaded with nobody out. EMU starter Jamie Melchert battled to get three straight groundouts, including two force outs at home plate to end the frame with WMU leading, 1-0.

In the third inning, the Eagles answered back to take a 2-1 lead after Gerber's two-run single to center-field. It would stay that way until the fifth when the Broncos tied it up with a run-scoring double off the fence in left-field by Gracie Barstad. They would add five unearned runs an inning later to take a commanding, 7-2, lead.

The Eagles put the tying run at home plate in the form of Sarah Gerber with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh. The sophomore drove in a run with a single, but the Eagles weren't able to climb all the way back, scoring just three runs to fall, 7-5.

Melchert (4-12) was the hard-luck losing pitcher in her effort, tossing all seven innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out four.

In game two, Gerber put the Eagles on top first, delivering an RBI single in the opening frame to give the home team a 1-0 lead. In her next at-bat, she added a bases clearing, three-run double that nearly resulted in a grand slam had it not been for WMU center-fielder, Lexi Jager, reaching up over the fence to bring the ball back into play.

The Eagles took a 6-0 lead into the fourth inning until WMU's Meredith Whitney cracked her second home run of the year to left-center, a two-run shot to make it 6-2. An inning later, the Broncos added a pair to cut the deficit to 6-4 after Sarah Thomas' two-run single to right-center.

Western Michigan then posted three more runs in the sixth off Melchert, who relieved starter Jillian Williamson in the fifth inning. The Broncos took advantage of two EMU fielding miscues and Tschetter capped the comeback with an RBI double down the left-field line.

With the Eagles trailing, 7-6, and down to their final three outs, Skodinski came up with a game-tying leadoff home run to send the game into extra innings. It was her third home run and 21st RBI of the season.

Eastern Michigan will conclude its regular season schedule with a two-game MAC set against Northern Illinois, which had its doubleheader with Central Michigan rained out Friday. First pitch between the Eagles and Huskies is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.
