YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Four runs in the bottom of the fourth, combined with three Warriors errors, helped the Eastern Michigan University Baseball team to a 6-4 win over Wayne State University Tuesday evening, April 6, at Oestrike Stadium. With the victory, the Eagles sweep the season series from their Detroit-area rivals, 2-0.
The Eagles (13-16) have won three-of-four, while Wayne State falls to 16-12 on the season.
Senior Steve Young (Port Huron, Mich.-Port Huron Northern-Jackson C.C.) (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season Tuesday, hurling two innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball. Tim Combs claimed his first save of the year after one and one-third innings without giving up a run. For Wayne State, Alex Pierse (1-1) took the loss, going three innings while allowing two runs and walking four EMU batters.
The Eagles held a slight 2-1 advantage until the bottom of the fourth when EMU sent nine batters to the dish en route to a four run effort to break the game open, 6-1. After sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) popped out to begin the inning, Warriors pitcher Sylvester issued two walks to three Eagles to load the bases.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing C.C.) capitalized with a sharp single through the right side to score two runs for his 19th RBI of the season. A wild pitch by Sylvester then plated junior Bo Kinder (Wapella, Ill.-Clinton Community-Kaskaskia C.C.) for the inning's third run. Finally, junior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) reached base and Magsig came home on a fielding error by Warrior shortstop Walker for the final run of the frame.
Junior Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) shut the door on Wayne State for the remainder of the game, facing five batters and striking out one to earn his first save of the season.
The Eagles were out-hit by the Warriors, 8-4, but managed to draw nine walks from WSU pitchers and capitalize on three errors.
The Eagles will now gear-up for three-game weekend set with Mid-American Conference foe Kent State University beginning Friday, April 9, at 3 p.m. inside Oestrike Stadium. The game will be available on Eagle All-Access via EMUEagles.com.
