YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team was unable to recover from an eight-run top of the fifth inning by the Kent State University Golden Flashes Friday afternoon, April 9, at Oestrike Stadium, as the Eagles dropped the series opener, 16-1.
EMU falls to 13-17 and 4-3 in the Mid-American Conference with the loss, while KSU improved to 17-15 (5-2 MAC) with the win, the fourth straight for the Golden Flashes over the Eagles.
Junior ace Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) had his shortest start of the season in the loss, as he went just four and two-thirds, giving up 12 runs (11 earned) on nine hits and three walks to put his record at 2-3 this season. In seven previous starts, Chaffins went six or more innings, including two complete games.
Junior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and sophomore Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) both collected two hits for the Eagles in the loss, but junior Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) scored the only EMU run, as his solo home run over the wall in right field in the bottom of the seventh was his fourth of the season.
Kent State starting pitcher David Starn improved his record to 5-1 on the year with the win, as he went seven innings, giving up just one run on five hits and one walk, while fanning three batters.
The Golden Flashes plated eight runs in the top of the fifth inning, as a three-run homer by Anthony Gallas over the wall in left field and a two-run shot by Lyon paved the way and helped Kent State top the Eagles in game one of a three-game set.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, April 10, at 3 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium. Sophomore right hander Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake) will get the nod for the Eagles, while Robert Sabo will start on the mound for Kent State.
