Finals Set For Final Day of 2010 MAC Championships

The Eagles will be well represented on the final day of competition towards trying to capture their 29th MAC title in the program's history

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – On the final day of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, host Eastern Michigan University advanced 15 swimmers through to finals including six in the 200 breaststroke alone, five which will be competing in the championship final. The Eagles entered the final day of competition with 459 points, 41.5 points ahead of second place Buffalo. EMU will be vying for its fourth straight MAC title and 29th in the program's history when the finals commence at 7 p.m. tonight at Jones Natatorium on the campus of EMU.
Freshman Jacob Hanson had the second-fastest qualifying time in the day's first preliminary event, the 200 backstroke. His time of 1:46.57 was an NCAA consideration time and a new school record. Matt Schwippert of Buffalo, also a freshman, set the new MAC and meet standard with his prelim-best time of 1:45.86. Tyler Capen qualified for tonight's championship final as well, turning in a time of 1:48.85, good for fifth. Owen Grey and Alan Duski will compete in the consolation final this evening for the Eagles.
In the 100 freestyle, Justin Griggs turned in the second-best preliminary time, besting his seed time by more than a second after touching the wall in 44.83. Matt Zavislak finished with a time of 45.46 to qualify for fifth in the championship final as well.
EMU put four swimmers in the final prelim heat of the 200 breaststroke and advanced five through to the championship final tonight. Senior Scott Murphy set a new MAC, meet, pool and EMU standard with a time of 1:59.27. It was also an NCAA consideration time and entered him into tonight's championship final with the top preliminary time. Joining him in the final will be Matt Lifka, Troy Esentan, Sam Dolato and Connor Christie. Buffalo, Missouri State and Southern Illinois qualified one swimmer each to round out the top-eight.
The 200 butterfly was the final prelim event on day three and the Eagles put three swimmers into the finals with Owen Grey recording the top-time, touching the wall in 1:49.82. Keith Coghlan and Michael Kinross will join Grey for tonight's finals.
Also taking place tonight will be the three-meter finals as well as the 1,650 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay. Action begins at 7 p.m. at Jones Natatorium.
