YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University softball team will travel to South Bend, Ind. Tuesday, March 23, for a non-conference doubleheader against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. with game two to follow shortly thereafter. The Irish hold an 11-2 all-time series edge over the Eagles as both teams meet for the first time since 2008.

--

HOME OPENER ONE WEEK AWAY: The Eastern Michigan University softball team will open up the 2010 home schedule at Varsity Field Wednesday, March 31, with a doubleheader against the University of Detroit-Mercy at 3 p.m. The Eagles will host 16 home games this season, two more than last year, making up a total of 11 home dates in 2010. The Green and White went 7-7 at the friendly confines of Varsity Field in 2009.

ON DECK FOR THE EAGLES: The Eagles travel to Notre Dame, Ind. to take on the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a mid-week non-conference match-up Tuesday, March 23. It will be the first meeting between both sides since April 9, 2008 when UND secured a doubleheader sweep at home. EMU will seek its first win against the Irish since a 2-1 road victory April 10, 2007. UND holds the all-time series edge 11-2 while taking 10 of the last 11 meetings overall against the Eagles.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH: The University of Notre Dame has won its last four games and 16 of its last 17 to enter play at 17-5 overall. The Irish have faced two ranked teams this season in No. 1 Washington and No. 12 Ohio State. UND split both games, falling to Washington, 5-0, before defeating OSU, 12-5. Both games were at neutral sites. The Irish are coming off a 13-4 road victory over Western Michigan March 18, and will embark on a stretch of eight games in eight days beginning with their home opener against EMU Tuesday. UND's Erin Marrone leads the team in hitting with a .453 average while Heather Johnson and Christine Lux are tied for the most home runs on the team with six. Jody Valdivia is 13-2 in the circle with a 1.67 ERA in 16 starts.

DEMARINI INVITATIONAL RECAP: The Eagles went 1-2 in a weather-shortened tournament in Columbia, Mo. last weekend. Originally scheduled to play five games, EMU was only able to get in three due to a rain/snow mix in the area. The Green and White defeated Northern Colorado, 6-4, before dropping a 6-1 affair to Northwestern and a 9-0 setback to host and third-ranked Missouri. Saturday's showdown with the Tigers was moved to MU's indoor softball facility. EMU was scheduled to play Ball State and Northwestern to close out the tournament, but inclement weather cancelled both meetings. Neither game will be made up.

JENNY SCHERER IGNITES OFFENSE: Senior Jenny Scherer launched a three-run home run in the fourth inning against Northern Colorado to spark a comeback that saw the Eagles down 3-0 before pulling out a 6-4 victory in the end. It was Scherer's 40th home run of her career and fourth this season.

HITTING STREAKS SNAPPED: McKenna Russ and Jenny Scherer had season-long hitting streaks snapped in the 9-0 loss to Missouri Saturday, March 20. Russ had been sporting a stretch of six consecutive games with a hit entering Saturday's game, the longest streak by an Eagles this season, but it was stopped prematurely after Russ went 0-for-1 with a walk in her only two plate appearances. It appeared as if Scherer had extended her streak to five games with a single in the second inning, but a scoring change was made later on that changed the supposed hit to an error and subsequently awarded Missouri pitcher Chelsea Thomas with her fourth career no-hitter.

OAKLEY SERVES AS INTERIM HEAD COACH: Head Coach Karen Baird, currently in her eighth year at Eastern Michigan University, is in the process of preparing for the arrival of her first born child and will take a break from her head coaching duties until she is ready to continue, per doctor's orders. In the meantime, fourth year Assistant Coach Eric Oakley will serve as interim head coach, overseeing all aspects of the program.
