EMU Takes Fourth At MAC Championships, Place Four on All-MAC

Eastern Michigan's women's swimming and diving team had a successful final day of the MAC Championships

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team brought home a fourth place finish, accumulating 453.5 points, to conclude the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships at Miami University Saturday, Feb. 27.
Samantha Partridge and Sarah Kowalski were named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team while Briana Emig and Danielle Hulvey were Second Team All-MAC selections. Head Diving Coach Buck Smith was Diving Coach of the Year.
In the evening's first final, the 1,650 free, Partridge turned in a Division I-B qualifying time of 16:33.16 en route to a second place finish behind event winner, Jacy Dyer of Toledo, who touched the wall in 16:21.74. It was a new MAC record which bested her old mark by more than 3.5 seconds back in 2008. Eastern's Emig took sixth in the event with a time of 16:51.77 to also place.
In the 200 back, Amanda Kiefer finished just outside of medaling, touching the wall in 1:59.88, good for fourth place. Toledo's Ashley Cusack finished just ahead of her to claim third with a time of 1:59.26 while Kenda Karchner of Akron took home first with a time of 1:57.76.
EMU's Kowalski and Toledo's Carly Harter tied for third place in the 100 free, each touching the wall in a Division I-B qualifying time of 50.20. Caroline Simmons of Buffalo took first by edging out Ohio's Chelsey Bower by the slimmest of margins, finishing in 49.69 seconds to Bower's time of 49.70.
In the 200 breast, Chelsea Allard made it onto the podium with an eighth place finish, touching the wall in 2:19.52. Kelsey Vehr of Miami set a meet, pool and MAC record by finishing with a time of 2:11.70.
The Eagles put three divers in the top-eight on the three-meter dive. Kelly Hendricks placed fourth with a score of 267.40 while Christina Nunez-Wood and Leslie Vizurraga took sixth and eighth with scores of 264.30 and 237, respectively. Elisa Torres earned points in the 200 fly, turning in a 10th place finish with a time of 2:04.11.
In the final event of the day, the 400 free relay team of Stephanie Cholyk, Partridge, Sarah Maraskine and Kowalski reached the podium and medaled, taking third place with a time of 3:25.71. It was seven-hundredths of a second ahead of fourth place Bowling Green and two places shy of Toledo, which took first with a Division I-B qualifying time of 3:21.77.
