Eagles return home for final regular season dual, Feb. 21
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team suffered its fourth-consecutive setback to a Mid-American Conference foe Sunday afternoon, Feb. 14, at the hands of No. 20-ranked Kent State University, 30-6.
Sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) (141 lbs.) and freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) (165 lbs.) were the only Eagles to record victories on the day.
The Eagles (10-11-1; 0-4 MAC) are now just 1-37-1 all-time against the Golden Flashes (15-3; 4-0 MAC), who are in search of their second-straight MAC regular season title.
After a decision and technical fall by Kent State at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs. to begin the match, Phillips cut the EMU deficit to 8-3 with a 6-1 decision over Chase Skonieczny at 141 lbs. With a 2-0 lead after one period, Phillips tallied two additional takedowns in the middle frame to gain a 6-1 edge. Phillips held strong in the final two minutes en route to the victory.
Then at 149 lbs., senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) fell just one point short of a second straight Eagle triumph in a 2-1 loss to Marcel Clopton. A penalty point charged to Piennar in the opening period proved to be the difference in the match, as Clopton's only other point came on a last-minute escape. The Flashes charged ahead, 11-3, after four matches.
Following a 6-4 loss for Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) at 157 lbs., fellow freshman Ortman fought his way to a 3-1 victory over Ross Tice thanks to a reversal with 13 seconds remaining in the 165 lbs. match. Ortman also earned an extra riding time point and pushed the Eagles back to within eight, 14-6.
The Green and White would run out of answers for the Golden Flash arsenal from that point on, as Kent State finished the dual by sweeping the final four matches and securing the 30-6 victory. In the heavyweight bout, junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) tried to send the Eagles back to Ypsilanti on a high note, but lost a tough 7-5 overtime battle to Joe Tymoszczuk.
The Eagles will wrap-up the 2009-10 regular season with a home dual against Ohio University Sunday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
