The Eagles finish the regular season 10-12-1 and 0-5 in the Mid-American Conference while the Bobcats end with a 12-5 mark and a 3-2 conference record.
“True” freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) led the dual off at 125 lbs. against Gabe Ramos. Ramos took a 2-0 lead and nearly three minutes of riding time into the third period and tacked on an additional eight points in the closing moments to claim a 10-2 major decision. The Bobcats jumped ahead, 4-0, after one match
The Green and White evened the score at 4-4 when Jenkins bested Michael Fennell, 13-2, at 133 lbs. After surrendering an early takedown to being the 133 lbs. match, Jenkins responded with a reversal and a five huge near fall points for a 7-2 edge after two minutes. Jenkins added five points over the final two periods plus 3:34 of riding time en route to the victory.
Sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) then took to the mat at 141 lbs. to face No. 11-ranked Germaine Lindsey. Phillips fell behind early, 2-0, following a Lindsey takedown, but registered a pair of escapes to tie the match midway through the second period. However, Lindsey went back ahead in the final 20 seconds of the period, 4-2, with his second takedown.
Despite a late third period takedown by Phillips which tied the score at four, Lindsey won the match thanks to an extra point for 1:30 of accumulated riding time. The Bobcats went back on top, 7-4.
At 149 lbs., Seth Morton used three takedowns and an escape for a 7-1 lead over Pienaar after two periods. In the final frame, Morton tacked on six points including three by way of near fall to wrap-up Ohio's second major decision of the day and extend the lead to 11-4.
With his team trailing by seven, freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) fell behind 2-0 at 157 lbs. against Clay Tucker. Both wrestlers remained largely stalemated throughout the remainder of the match, as Tucker escaped with a 3-0 victory for Ohio's third consecutive win.
Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) looked to reverse the Eagles' fortunes as the freshman jumped out to a narrow 2-1 edge over Kevin Christensen at 165 lbs. Christensen tied the affair at three apiece with 1:20 remaining in the match, but Ortman was able to escape his grasp to regain the lead, 4-3. Ortman held on for the final 30 seconds to claim a 5-3 win and pull the Eagles back to within seven, 14-7.
The Eagles were not able to extend their winning ways to the 174 lbs. match, as Jacob Ison stormed out to a 7-1 lead after two periods over Brandel. Brandel inched closer with a third period takedown, but Ison the match was well out of reach as Ison prevailed, 9-3, to put the Bobcats back up by 10, 17-7.
At 184 lbs., “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) got the call to battle Brian Driscoll. Joseph wasted no time in dominating the match, as he went ahead, 4-0, before bringing Driscoll's back to the mat for a pin at the 2:42 mark. A celebratory Joseph earned his team six points and suddenly brought the Eagles to within four, 17-13.
Just as it seemed that momentum was in the Eagles' corner, the Bobcats stole the match back as No. 20-ranked Erik Schuth pinned freshman Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon) at the 2:38 mark of the 197 lbs. match. Schuth's win gave the Bobcats a 23-13 lead and assured his team dual victory.
Finally, sophomore Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) and Andy Hartshorn grappled in the heavyweight bout, where Schroeder battled back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of escapes to tie the score after two periods. Hartshorn gained a 3-2 edge with an escape and held on to win by that same score. The Bobcats ended the day with a 26-13 win.
The Eagles will now prepare for the MAC Championship, March 6-7, in Mount Pleasant, Mich. hosted by eight-time defending champion Central Michigan University.
