Nine Eagles Still in Contention at the MAC Championships

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Day one of the 2010 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships concluded Saturday, March 6, at Rose Arena with nine members of the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team still in the hunt for a top-five spot at the two-day event. Senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) has already secured fifth place at 174 lbs.
Overall, the Eagles are in sixth place with 11 team points while Central Michigan's 54.5 points are good for first place.
Although no EMU grapplers remain in their respective championship brackets, senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) (133 lbs.), freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) (165 lbs.), “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) (184 lbs.) and junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) (heavyweight) will begin Sunday with matches in the consolation bracket to determine who will advance to the consolation finals to face the loser of the championship match. Each wrestler is guaranteed at least fourth place but can finish as high as second.
Clair, Joseph and Wade each posted 1-1 records Saturday with opening round losses followed by victories. After CMU's Scotti Sentes won an 11-8 decision over Clair, the senior bested Ohio University's Quentin Keyes, 6-3, in the consolation bracket. Joseph notched a 7-4 decision over Northern Illinois University's Zach Benzio following a setback to Kent State University's Dustin Kilgore, 11-2. Finally, Wade bounced back from a 5-3 loss to NIU's Dakota Greenhaw to top OU's Andy Hartshorn, 3-1.
Ortman was the only member of the EMU squad to win his first round match, doing so with a convincing 8-2 decision over Kevin Christensen of OU. Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon then sent Ortman to the consolation bracket with a 9-4 decision.
The remainder of the EMU lineup has posted 0-2 records thus far, but each wrestler will have a chance to claim fifth spot in their respective weight classes on day two with a win in the fifth place match. “True” freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) will tangle with NIU's Izzy Montemayor at 125 lbs., sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) will battle UB's Andrew Schutt at 141 lbs., senior David Pienaar (Trafford-Pa. Greensburg Catholic Central) will wrestle in the final match of his collegiate career against KSU's Marcel Clopton at 149 lbs., freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) will meet up with KSU's Mallie Shuster at 157 lbs., and freshman Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon) will try for his first win against Scott Penny of NIU at 184 lbs..
Day two's action will pick up Sunday, March 7, beginning with the fifth-place matches at 10:30 a.m. Championship and consolation finals will begin at 11 a.m.
