MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) and senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum) became the 35th and 36th Eastern Michigan University wrestlers to qualify for the NCAA Championships with strong showings Sunday, March 7, at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Wade posted a 3-1 record for a second place finish at heavyweight, while Clair took fourth at 133 lbs. with a 1-2 mark. Both wrestlers head to the NCAA Championships for the first time in their careers.
The Eagles finished the event in sixth place with 18 team points while Central Michigan marched to its ninth-consecutive MAC title with 94 points. Kent State University claimed runner-up honors with 73 points while Ohio University (62 points), the University at Buffalo (60.5 points) and Northern Illinois University (24.5 points) took third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Wade began Sunday with a shutout win in the consolation bracket against Buffalo's Jason Weber, 6-0. He then moved on to the consolation final, where CMU's Jarod Trice was forced to forfeit due to medical reasons, giving Wade the automatic victory. Clair's only match of the day ended in heartbreaking fashion, a 4-2 overtime loss to Kevin Smith of Buffalo.
For his runner-up performance, Wade also earned All-MAC Honorable Mention accolades.
In addition, a trio of Eagles, freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) (fourth place at 165 lbs.), “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) (fourth place at 184 lbs.) and senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich-Swan Valley) (fifth place at 174 lbs.), placed in their respective weight classes.
Ortman and Joseph each lost their respective consolation bouts on the day, with Ortman dropping a 4-1 decision to Ross Tice of Kent State and Joseph falling to CMU's Mike Miller, 8-5. Each grappler finished the event with a 1-2 record.
Brandel automatically received the fifth spot Saturday despite an 0-2 record.
The 133 lbs. and 174 lbs. weight classes were the only divisions in which fifth place matches were held. All remaining divisions placed only to fourth.
Wade and Clair will now head to Omaha, Neb. for the NCAA Championships, March 18-20.
