THE HOMESTAND CONTINUES: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team will continue its homestand Wednesday, Feb. 3, with a Mid-American Conference dual against the University at Buffalo at Bowen Field House at 7 p.m.. The Eagles then host Northern Illinois University Friday, Feb. 5, at 7 p.m.

BULLS AND HUSKIES REVISITED: EMU turned in split performances against UB and NIU last season, having beaten the Huskies at Bowen, Feb. 6, 2009, in an 18-16 thriller after opening the MAC schedule with a 25-8 setback at Buffalo, Nov. 26, 2008.

Buffalo and EMU will meet for the 15th time with the Bulls holding a 9-5 series advantage. An EMU victory last season over the NIU ended a seven-bout losing skid for the Green and White against the Huskies.

IT TAKES 10: Head Coach Derek DelPorto's squad has a glaring opportunity to head to Kent State, Feb. 14, with a winning conference record. In order to achieve this feat, however, DelPorto believes it's going to take a complete team effort.

“We have the talent and if we all come together and wrestle well as a team, we'll get the results,” said DelPorto.  “Wrestling in the Mid-American Conference is getting tougher every year and that is what it's going to take in order to win duals for many years to come.”

KEY MATCHUPS AGAINST UB: Buffalo's lineup will consist of three nationally ranked grapplers when the Bulls take the mat at Bowen Wednesday evening. At 133 lbs., senior Chris Jenkins (13-8) will take-on No. 19 ranked Kevin Smith. A healthy J.J. Johnson (12-8) will battle No. 16 ranked Desi Green at 149 lbs. Finally, freshman Alex Ortman (14-7) will get the call at 165 lbs. to face No. 20 ranked John-Martin Cannon.

ON THE VERGE OF 20 WINS: Two members of the EMU squad, senior Sean Clair and true freshman Phillip Joseph, are nearing the 20-win mark for the 2009-10 season. Clair sits at 19-10, while Joseph holds and 18-13 mark in his first season as an Eagle.

The Eagles have not had a 20-match winner since the 2007-08 campaign, when Clair posted a 27-4 regular season mark and Charlie Pienaar went 22-6.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE: The 2009-10 season has showcased many of EMU's potential future stars. Wrestlers such as Greg Egbert (6-10), Phillip Joseph (18-13) and Alex Ortman (14-7) have already been major contributors to the starting lineup this season.

“These guys are very important not only for this season, but for our future,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “They are going to be, along with the other young guys on our team, the nucleus of our future success.  I am glad a few of them are seeing action this early in their careers, its good for them and us.”

BEGINNING OF THE END: Following home bouts against UB and NIU, the Eagles will close out the 2009-10 regular season with a road match-up at Kent State University, Feb. 14. Ohio University then invades the Convocation Center, Feb. 21, for the final dual before the MAC Championship, March 6-7, in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

EMU POSTSEASON FACTS: Last season, the Eagles placed fifth at the MAC Championship with 36.5 team points. John McClure took home championship honors at 197 lbs., which earned him a trip to St. Louis, Mo., for the NCAA National Championship.

Other placewinners included Chris Jenkins at 125 lbs. (third), Sean Clair at 133 lbs. (fourth), J.J. Johnson at 149 lbs. (third), and David Wade at heavyweight (third).

WRESTLING ON EAGLE ALL-ACCESS: Don't forget that the Feb. 21 bout with Ohio University will be streamed via Eagle All-Access exclusively on EMUEagles.com beginning at 2 p.m.!

Subscription packages are available for $5.95 for a single-match and $9.95 for a monthly package. Both web casts will offer fans a high-quality viewing experience, as well as natural sound from the Convocation Center.
