YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team's Mid-American Conference woes continued Wednesday evening, Feb. 3, as the Eagles dropped a 28-12 decision to the University at Buffalo. Senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central), “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East), and sophomore Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) each picked-up a win in their respective matches.
With the loss, the Eagles (10-9-1; 0-2 MAC) fell for the fifth time in their last six conference tilts dating back to the 2008-09 season. The Bulls improved to 8-5-1 and 1-1 in the MAC with the road victory.
Buffalo took a 6-0 lead after the 125 lbs. bout, when Dan Bishop pinned “true” freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) at the 3:37 mark. A trio of first period takedowns gave Bishop a 6-2 lead with five minutes remaining. In the second frame, a Bishop reversal put him in perfect position to take Egbert to the mat.
Senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) tried to dig the home team out of an early rut against No. 19 ranked Kevin Smith. Through two periods, Jenkins managed just two escapes while Smith tallied three takedowns and an escape for a 7-2 lead. Jenkins was held at bay for the remainder of the match as Smith walked with an 11-5 decision to put the Bulls ahead, 9-0
At 141 lbs. sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) jumped out to an early 4-2 advantage over Andrew Schutt. However, a tightly contested second period resulted in a 8-6 lead for Schutt with two minutes left. An escape by Phillips early in the third period pulled him to within one, but he would come no closer. Schutt won the match, 9-7, and gave the Bulls a 12-0 lead through three matches.
The Eagles caught a break at 149 lbs., where Pienaar prepared to grapple with No. 16 ranked Desi Green. Just seconds into the first period, Green fell to the mat with an injury and was unable to continue the match. The medical forfeit gave the Eagles six points to propel them back into contention, 12-6.
Freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) then stepped out onto the mat for the 157 lbs. match against Andrew Stella. Both grapplers fought a furious first two periods with Stella holding a 4-2 lead. The final frame saw Sulzer wrestle his way out of a defensive position to pull him back to within one, 4-3. Desperate for points in the final 10 seconds, Sulzer was unable to take Stella down as Buffalo charged ahead, 15-6, with five matches to go.
The Bulls continued their winning ways at 165 lbs., as No. 20 John-Martin Cannon bested freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford), 9-5. Down 5-1, Ortman used an escape and a takedown to trim his deficit to one point. In the closing minutes, Cannon staved off an Ortman attack for a 9-5 win and a commanding 18-6 lead for the visitors.
At 174 lbs., junior Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) got on the board first against Brian Sheehan with an opening period takedown. Late in the second period, however, Sheehan brought Hendirck to the mat and recorded the second UB pin of the evening at the 4:43 mark. This put the Bulls further ahead, 24-5, as the Eagles were also charged a team point for a bench penalty.
Joseph and Josh Peters battled in the 184 lbs. bout, where both grapplers were deadlocked, 5-5, late into the second period. Joseph ended the period on a high note with a takedown for a 7-5 advantage, and wasted no time in the third period with an escape and takedown to go ahead, 10-5.
A fatigued Peters was no match for Joseph the remainder of the match, as the true freshman won an 15-7 major decision to get the Eagles back on the board, 24-9.
With a win under their belts, the Eagles sent freshman Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon) to the mat to face Jimmy Hamel at 197 lbs. Hamel took an early lead and never looked back in a 15-6 major decision victory. With one bout remaining, the Bulls had the match well at hand, 28-9.
Finally, Schroeder tussled with Jason Weber in the heavyweight bout. Both wrestlers were tied until midway through the match when Weber escaped to go ahead, 1-0. Schroeder knotted the affair at one with an escape of his own to begin the final period.
Battling until the end, Schroeder won the match in the closing seconds with a takedown and an extra point for riding time to earn a 4-1 victory. The final score was 28-12 for the Bulls.
The Eagles will finish up their four-bout homestand Friday evening, Feb. 5, with a matchup against Northern Illinois University inside Bowen Field House at 7 p.m.
