YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—A pair of resilient performances from senior Justin Brandel (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) and “true” freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) proved not enough Friday evening, Feb. 5, as the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped its third consecutive Mid-American Conference tilt to the Northern Illinois University Huskies, 21-15, at Bowen Field House.
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 10-10-1 and 0-3 in the MAC, while the Huskies improve to 9-7 and 1-2 in conference action.
Action got underway at 125 lbs. as “true” freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) faced Izzy Montemayor. Montemayor notched a reversal early in the second period and forced Egbert's back to the mat for a pin at the 3:24 mark of the match. NIU held an early 6-0 lead.
Senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh) began the 133 lbs. match against Zach Taylor with a takedown to go ahead, 2-0. Jenkins added to his lead with a second takedown midway through period two. In the final frame, he completed a critical reversal to put the match out of reach for Taylor. Jenkins won the match, 6-1, which included an extra point for riding time.
In search of a second EMU victory, sophomore Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) entered the 141 lbs. match to face Vince Castillo where a Phillips battled back from a 2-0 first period deficit with an escape and a takedown to take a 3-2 lead into the second period. Castillo commanded much of the middle two minutes as he accumulated 1:55 of riding time. However, neither grappler was able to tally a point as the score remained 3-2.
Castillo wasted no time tying the score, 3-3, in the third period with an escape in the opening 10 seconds. Action remained neutral until the closing 20 seconds, when Castillo was able to record a takedown. The Huskies went ahead, 9-3, as a result of Castillo's 6-3 win.
At 149 lbs., senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) and Dan Ruettiger wrestled to a scoreless opening three minutes, but back-and-forth action in the second period resulted in a two-point reversal for Ruettiger. In search of his first points of the bout, Pienaar was unable to gain ground on his opponent in the third period, as Reuttiger tacked-on a takedown and a riding time point for the 5-0 decision.
In a 12-3 hole, the Eagles looked for a boost from freshman Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) at 157 lbs. against Bryan Deutsch. The match remained scoreless until the fifth minute, when Deutsch registered an escape to go ahead, 1-0. After several strong takedown attempts by Sulzer failed at the end of the second, Deutsch responded with a quality final period of work to squeak by with a 1-0 victory.
John Odeen started the scoring at 165 lbs. with a first period takedown of freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford). Down 3-1 in the closing period, Ortman escaped Odeen's grasp and immediately took him to the mat to take the lead, 4-3. With under a minute to play, Odeen knotted the score at four with an escape. In the final ten seconds, Odeen stunned the home crowd with a match-deciding takedown for NIU's third straight decision, 6-5, and an 18-3 Huskies lead.
Brandel ended the NIU winning streak in decisive fashion at 174 lbs., when he forced Mason True to his back at the 2:37 mark. Brandel put the Green and White back in contention at 18-9.
A barrage of takedowns and escapes capped-off an 8-6 first period lead for Zach Benzio at 184 lbs. over Joseph. Joseph pulled to within one, 11-10, early in the third period with a takedown and eventually tied the score, 12-12 with a second takedown following a Benzio escape.
Neither grappler held riding time advantage headed into the final minute of play, but Joseph commanded that entire minute to rack-up 1:21 of total riding time to pull off a 13-12 victory and bring the Bowen crowd to its feet.
With his team still trailing in the dual, 18-12, senior Josh Lewis (West Liberty, Ohio-Salem) took to the mat to face Scott Penny. Penny held a narrow 2-0 edge to begin the second period and added to that lead with his second takedown. Lewis managed a reversal to pull to within two points, 4-2, but Penny added three straight points to go ahead, 8-2.
A Lewis reversal was not enough to overcome Penny, as the NIU wrestler walked away with an 11-4 victory to secure the dual for the Huskies, 21-12.
To finish the evening junior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) battled Dakota Greenhaw in the heavyweight bout. Wade tallied the first points of the game with a takedown in the waning seconds of the opening period, and added five more points to take a 7-2 lead into the final frame.
Greenhaw was unable to find an answer in the third period as Wade ended the night on a winning note for the Eagles, 8-3. The final result was a 21-15 win for the Huskies.
The Eagles will now hit the road for a Sunday, Feb. 14, MAC tilt with Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The match is slated for 2 p.m.
