The NSCAA announced EMU's Monique Budani and Stephanie Clarke to the All-Great Lakes Region teams
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) – The National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) announced its All-Region teams, naming senior goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) to the All-Great Lakes Region First Team and freshman forward Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) to the third team.
This marks the fourth time Eastern Michigan has garnered multiple all-region selections and first in consecutive years after the Eagles put three on the team in 2009. It is also the first time EMU has had consecutive first team picks following Ashley Rodrigues' first team honor last season. Budani is the fourth first team selection for EMU in the program's history.
The Whitby, Ontario native was honored fittingly following a superb season that saw her finish her career by setting EMU records for saves in a single-season with 146 and career saves with 382. Budani also set the all-time mark in save percentage, stopping shots at a clip of .872. She also goes down in EMU history second in minutes played, second in shutouts (23), third in wins (27) and third in goals against average (0.94).
Budani finished 13th nationally with an .874 save percentage while also accounting for the fifth-most saves in a single game, stopping 17 shots in a loss to Michigan State.
Clarke burst onto the scene in her first season as an Eagle in 2010. The London, Ontario native finished second on the team in points with 14, scoring four goals and dishing out six assists. In a three-game stretch, Clarke posted 11 points including back-to-back five-point efforts in consecutive wins over Akron (Sept. 26) and Bowling Green (Oct. 1).
Against Akron, she nearly posted her first career hat trick, only to be denied by a great save by the opposing goalkeeper. She was responsible for three of the four goals in EMU's 4-1 win. Then, against Bowling Green, her goal and three assists led to a 6-4 victory.
