EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team put a cap on the 2010 portion of its schedule as the 48th Annual Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University came to a close Thursday, Dec. 30.

Sophomore Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) was the only EMU wrestler to advance to day two of the Midlands. The 157-pounder advanced deep into the consolation bracket after putting together a day one tournament record of 3-1.

His time on day two would be short-lived as he was ousted in his first match against Mid-American Conference foe Bryan Deutsch of Northern Illinois. Sulzer battled hard, but Deutsch managed to secure a first period pin just eight seconds shy of the horn leading to a seventh place finish tournament finish at 157.

The Eagles recorded a respectable 10-20 record against some of the top wrestlers in the nation. They went 0-8 against ranked opponents with Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) having the closest result, coming within four points in a 5-1 defeat to #8 Rob Morrison in his opening match of the 174-pound bracket.

The University of Missouri took first place in the tournament with a score of 103.5, recording three fourth place finishers and one third place finisher. The University of Wisconsin took second with a 95.5 points followed by Lehigh (93), Iowa (91) and Pittsburgh (82.5) to round out the top-five. EMU finished in 25th place with a score of 9.5 points.

The Eagles will open the new year of competition Jan. 8, when they made the short trip north to compete at the Spartan Duals hosted by Michigan State University.
