EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) - Day one of the 48th Annual Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University is in the books as 10 Eagles competed against some of the top wrestlers in the nation in arguably the most prestigious mid-season tournament in the country, Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) went 3-1 on the day to become the lone Eagle to advance to day two with a chance to wrestle back for third place in the 157-pound weight class on Thursday.
At 141 pounds, Mike LeHolm (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Northwest) overcame an opening round, 14-5, defeat to second-seeded Boris Navachkov of Cal Poly to pick up a 7-0 shutout victory against Northwestern's Pat Greco who wrestled unattached. LeHolm's day came to an end as he fell to #8 Jon Kohler, 7-0.
Teammate and fellow 141-pounder, Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids), fought hard, but suffered two major decision defeats to end his day.
At 149, Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) experienced a challenging day of his own as he took on two opponents each seeded in the top-11. His opening round match saw him square off against Coulthurst Schmitt of Wisconsin, surrendering to the sixth-seeded wrestler in a tech. fall decision, 16-1. His next match against #11 Dan Osterman was a little closer, but unfortunately the result was much the same, falling 10-2.
Sulzer earned an opening round 5-3 decision over Stanford's Kyle Meyer before falling to Northern Iowa's David Bonin in a close bout, 4-1. Sulzer pressed on and continued his day by defeating Drake Houdashelt of Missouri, 6-3, setting up a showdown with Iowa's Mike Kelly with chance to become EMU's lone wrestler to advance to the second day of competition. He capitalized by squeezing out a 6-4 win to still have an opportunity to finish in the top-seven.
At 165, Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) claimed a 7-6 victory over Cleveland State's Robbie Michaels, but then wound up in a tough draw as he faced top-seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin, falling to the nation's top wrestler at 165 in a third period pin at 6:36. His day and tournament would wind to a close with a tech. fall defeat to Ohio Northern's Luke Miller.
J.T. Rice (Hilliard, Ohio-Davidson) also went 1-for-3 on the day including a 14-5 major decision victory over Jeremiah Hinton of Triton in his first consolation bout. Rice's opening round match faced him off against seventh-seeded Ryan DesRoches of Cal Poly, who showed his worth of earning a high seed with a second period pin at 3:44. In his third match, Bucknell's Corey Lear got the best of Rice with a 6-0 decision.
Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) displayed a lot of toughness in each of his three matches at 174. After a close 5-1 first round loss to eighth-seeded Rob Morrison of Rider, Eggert bounced back to record a win over Ohio Northern's Kyle Kwiat, 6-5. However, Missouri's Pat Wright would put an end to Eggert's run by handing him a 4-0 defeat later on.
Mike Curby (Osseo, Mich.-Hillsdale) wrestled unattached for the Eagles at 174, but came up short in earning a victory after dropping both of his bouts.
Wes Schroeder's (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) hot start to the season continued as he defeated Cleveland State's Chris Weber, 7-3, in his first round heavyweight bout. His success would leave him behind in the second round as he suffered a 5-0 defeat to eighth-seeded Blake Rasing of Iowa.
Meanwhile, David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) battled a close match against Missouri's Tyler Perry in his first round bout, only to see Perry advance on a narrow 3-2 decision. The result matched up both EMU wrestlers in the consolation bracket. Two guys that go against each other in practice everyday would face off to see who advanced to take on Iowa State's Matt Gibson. As expected, it was a close match, but Wade came out victorious, 3-1.
Wade would add an 8-2 victory over Northwestern's Ben Kuhar in his next bout before being ousted in a close 7-4 decision to Iowa State's Matt Gibson.
Sulzer will continue on in day two on Thursday, Dec. 30, as his first match will be against a familiar foe in Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch, who is seeded fifth in the 157-pound bracket.
Day two begins with session three at noon inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The highly anticipated super match between Jake Herbert and Ben Askren will take place at 3:30 p.m., preceding session four's championship, third, fifth-place matches which will begin at 7:15 p.m.
