YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team capped off a festive night of competition and ceremonies to record a decisive 38-3 win over Cleveland State in a non-conference dual meet here in Bowen Field House Friday, Dec. 3, 2010.
“It was a really great evening,” EMU Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “It was nice to see a good crowd and hopefully the word gets spread that we have an exciting team to watch.”
The evening was filled with special events in addition to the dual meet between the Eagles and Vikings.
A middle school dual meet between the Flat River Wrestling Club and Team Metro All-Stars was held from 6-7 p.m.
Once the middle schoolers were finished, the first five duals between EMU and Cleveland State were wrestled followed by a brief ceremony to dedicate the new EMU wrestling locker room facility and the supports that purchased a locker were honored.
The wrestling continued with a flurry after that intermission as redshirt freshman Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) opened the meet with a decisive 10-3 win over Ben Willeford at 125 pounds. Germaine jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, built it to 4-2 after the second period and dominated the third for the victory.
Junior Filiberto Colon (Belleville, N.J.-Belleville) then came out on fire at 133 pounds, pinning Cleveland State's Nick Flannery at 2:05 of the first period to stake the Eagles to a quick 9-0 lead.
In the 141-pound match, EMU redshirt freshman Mike LeHolm (Jackson, Mich.-Northwest) fell behind early by a 2-0 score and was trailing 7-2 in the third period before rallying to cut the lead to 7-4 but could not make up the difference in a 7-4 setback.
After a college showcase match between middle schoolers Alex Martinez and Devin Schroeder, the college dual-meet continued with the 149-pound match between EMU redshirt junior Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) and CSU's Lawrence Cavello.
Phillips jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the match and went on to record a 6-2 win over Cavello.
The 157-pound match between EMU redshirt sophomore Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) and CSU's Koort Leyrer, freshman from Holt, Mich., began with Sulzer scoring on a takedown early in the first period and the Eagle sophomore would go on to record a 16-3 major decision to boost EMU to a 16-3 team lead.
The donors to the EMU Locker Room Campaign were then introduced to the crowd. The donors included: David Beck, Robert Beck, Franklin Beck, Pete Beck, Dave Dean, current Head Coach Derek DelPorto, George and Barb Lesko, Drew Lesko, Bill Morris, Paula Pettigrew, Carl and LuAnn Pienaar, Jose Ramirez, Casey Randolph, Corey and Chris Slater, Doug Willer, and Judge Donald Shelton.
The 165-pound match featured two seniors, EMU's Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) and Cleveland State's Robbie Michaels.
Hendrick built an early 2-1 lead and then brought the near-capacity crowd of 550 to its feet with a stunning takedown late in the third period, breaking a 4-4 tie and taking a 6-4 win at 165.
“That kid (Michaels) beat Nick last week and was undefeated and nationally ranked so that made it exciting and Nick found a way to win,” DelPorto said of Hendrick's come-from-behind thrilling win.
Like most of the matches during the meet, Eastern redshirt sophomore Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) started off with a 2-0 lead in the first period of his 174-pound match with Aric Thurn. Eggert would build his lead to 14-3 before recording an impressive 21-4 tech fall victory.
The 184-pound match featured a pair of state of Michigan High School products in EMU redshirt frosh Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) and CSU's Corbin Boone, another Holt H.S. product like teammate Leyrer.
Hoballah turned in a strong first period, rolling to a 5-0 lead, just missing a pin when the buzzer sounded. He would go on to produce a 16-0 tech fall over Boone to stake the Eagles to a 28-3 lead.
The 197-pound match between EMU redshirt freshman Nick Whitenburg (Temperence, Mich.-Temperence Bedford) would continue the Eagles' string of 2-0 starts and would increase his advantage to 6-0 before turning in a pin at 4:33 of the second period.
EMU redshirt junior Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) closed out the match with a 2-1 win at heavyweight for a 38-3 EMU dual-meet win.
