EVANSTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad was overmatched in a 34-3 loss to the ninth-ranked Northwestern Wildcats in a non-conference dual meet at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Sunday, Dec. 12.
Junior heavyweight Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) was the lone victor for the Eagles as he defeated Ben Kuhar 2-0 for his fifth straight victory. The Eagles fall to 3-2 on the season in dual meet competition while the 'Cats improve to 7-0 with the win.
Freshman Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) faced a tall task in taking on NU senior Brandon Precin, who entered the meet ranked second in the nation at 125 pounds and undefeated on the season at 11-0. That coupled with home mat advantage was too much to overcome as Precin took the major decision victory, 12-4, giving the 'Cats an early 4-0 lead.
Junior Filiberto Colon (Belleville, N.J.-Belleville Senior) was scheduled to take on Levi Mele, ranked 20th-nationally at 133 pounds, but a late scratch saw Robert Joyce take his place. The scrappy Colon made a match of it, but in the end fell by a point, 4-3.
Two freshmen went at it at 141 pounds as EMU's Mike LeHolm (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Northwest) took on NU's Kaleb Friedley. Friedley entered the match with an impressive 12-1 mark on the young season and would improve upon it with a first period pin of LeHolm at the 2:22 mark.
With a commanding 13-0 lead, the 'Cats sent sixth-ranked and undefeated Andrew Nadhir to the mat to face EMU junior Corey Phillips (Canton, Mich.-Canton) at 149 pounds. Phillips held his own, posting eight points against a difficult opponent, but Nadhir bested him by five point, taking the bout, 13-8.
It wouldn't get any easier as EMU sophomore Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) struggled to get into any groove as seventh-ranked Jason Welch grinded out a 5-0 win at 157 pounds. Coming off a thrilling victory in his last bout against Cleveland State, Dec. 3, Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) took on NU's Kevin Bialka at 165 pounds. Hendrick tried to give EMU its first points of the day, but Bialka was too strong in pulling out a narrow, 4-1, win.
At 174, Brian Roddy continued Northwestern's dominance with another first period pin, making quick work of EMU's Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee). Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) came up just short, falling to Aaron Jones, 7-3, in the 184-pound bout.
Next, freshman Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford), who entered the day with wins in seven of his last eight bouts, took junior John Schoen to overtime. However, a quick takedown of Whitenburg gave Schoen the sudden victory and the 'Cats a 34-0 advantage.
And in the final match of the day, Schroeder finally got the Eagles on the board with a slim 2-0 victory over Kuhar to mark the final tally at 34-3.
Others competed at the Cleveland State Open, highlighted by a runner-up finish by senior heavyweight David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) who went 3-1 on the day only falling to Northwestern's Mike McMullan in the championship bout.
Freshman Jake Byers (Cedar Springs, Mich.-Rockford) wrestled to a fifth place finish at 125 pounds after going 4-2 on the day while Seth Schaner (Big Rapids, Mich.-Big Rapids) nearly had a shot for third place before retiring early due to injury. He went 3-2 in the tournament.
EMU will be back in action next week when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take part in the annual F.I.T.E. Duals hosted by the University of Indiana Dec. 19. The Eagles will face two difficult opponents in Missouri and host Indiana.
