- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad looks to rebound after a diffiicult loss to No. 9 Northwestern a week ago by heading down to Bloomington, Ind. for the annual F.I.T.E. Duals hosted by the University of Indiana. The Eagles will take on No. 24 Missouri and host Indiana in what should prove to be a great day of competitive wrestling.

PUTTING UP A F.I.T.E.: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad will head to Bloomington, Ind. this weekend to take part in the Annual F.I.T.E. Duals hosted by the University of Indiana, Sunday, Dec. 19. There, the Eagles will take on Indiana and No. 24 Missouri. EMU split both duals at last year's event by defeating Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 37-6, after a tough, 29-6, loss to Indiana.

WEEKLY UPDATE: Last time out, Dec. 12, the Eagles suffered a 34-3 setback to No. 9 Northwestern on the road in Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats jumped out to a commanding lead, taking the first nine matches before EMU's Wes Schroeder salvaged a 2-0 win over Ben Kuhar for the Eagles' lone victory in the dual. Schroeder improved to 6-2 on the season and extended his overall win streak to five wins.
“The score doesn't do the way we wrestled any justice,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said. “We lost two really tight one or two-point matches, an overtime match, and two matches we were winning and found a way to lose.
“Northwestern is very talented and we wrestled well. They are stacked with experience and we have some youth. I felt good about the match.”
A day earlier, several Eagles took to the mat at the Cleveland State Open. Senior David Wade finished second in a competitive heavyweight bracket while Jake Byers took fifth at 125-pounds.

EAGLES UP TO THE CHALLENGE: EMU will face a pair of challenging opponents this weekend as Missouri and host Indiana each boast a slew of grapplers ranked in the nation's top-25. The Tigers have wrestlers ranked in nine different weight classes including four represented in the top-10: Alan Waters (125), Zach Toal (165), Brent Haynes (197) and Dom Bradley (HWT).
Meanwhile, Indiana, which is on the verge of cracking into the top-25 team poll, sports three individuals in the top-25. The Eagles saw Sean Clair ('10) break into the rankings a year ago at 125 pounds, but have yet to see an individual from this year's squad get there. A successful weekend in Bloomington could go a long way in making that happen soon down the road.
“Indiana and Missouri are both very tough teams with a lot of nationally ranked guys in their line-ups,” DelPorto said. “It's all about performing as best we can at this point. In order for us to win these duals, we're going to have to win the close ones. Hopefully things will go our way.”

THE CAPTAIN'S CLUB: Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the captains for the 2010-11 squad. As chosen by their peers, senior heavyweight David Wade - who is coming off a season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships - headlines the five-member group. Redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, sophomore Aaron Sulzer and juniors J.J. Johnson and Corey Phillips round out this year's captains for the Eagles.

EMU RANKED 20TH-NATIONALLY IN APR RANKINGS: Eastern Michigan University's wrestling program is tied with Pittsburgh and Princeton in the annual Academic Performance Ratings (APR) as released by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine's June Issue. It's a new program-best for the Eagle grapplers. EMU ranks ahead of all Mid-American Conference institutions in the highly-regarded poll including Northern Illinois (29th), Buffalo (44th), Kent State (47th), Central Michigan (60th) and Ohio (67th).
