Eagle Wrestling Comes Up Short at Indiana Duals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a pair of non-conference duals, falling to the 24th-ranked University of Missouri Tigers, 32-6, and host Indiana University Hoosiers, 24-13, at the Indiana Duals inside University Gym, Sunday, Dec. 19.
The Eagles captured six individual victories on the day, highlighted by a major decision victory for redshirt freshman Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley), but it wasn't enough as the Eagles fell to 3-4 on the young season. The Tigers improve to 8-4 while the Hoosiers move to 7-2.
EMU's opened the day with their second Big Ten Conference opponent in as many weeks after falling to ninth-ranked Northwestern, 34-3, a week earlier. The Eagles went point-for-point with the Hoosier grapplers after Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) took a 4-1 decision over IU's Nick Avery in the 174-pound bout to make the score 13-13.
Also contributing was Germaine's 11-3 major decision victory at 125, Mike LeHolm's (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Northwest) 9-6 decision at 141, and Nick Hendrick's (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) 3-1 decision at 165.
At 184, IU's Eric Cameron gave his squad a 17-13 lead and momentum heading into the final two bouts as he defeated EMU's Khodor Hoballah (Dearborn, Mich.-Dearborn) with a major decision victory, 11-3. Nick Whitenburg then fell to 14th-ranked Matt Powless, 14-4, to secure the team win with one match left. In the heavyweight bout, Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison) saw his five-match win streak come to an end as he lost by the slimmest of margins to IU's Ricky Alcala, 3-2.
Against a very tough Missouri squad, the Eagles struggled to get much of anything going as the Tigers entered the dual with four wrestlers ranked in the nation's top-17. In fact, UM took its first four bouts to grab an early 19-0 lead heading into the 157-pound match between EMU's Aaron Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio-Holy Name) and UM's Nick Gregoris. The sophomore Sulzer finally got the Eagles on the board by taking a 6-3 decision to improve to 6-5 on the year.
At 197, Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) defeated UM's Brent Haynes, 9-4, to make the team score, 29-6, while EMU's David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) made his first dual start of the season, falling narrowly to fifth-ranked Dom Bradley, 5-2.
The Eagles will be off for the next 10 days before taking to the mat at the 48th Annual Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill. Dec. 29-30.
