OFF TO EVANSTON: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad will take its 3-1 dual meet record to Evanston, Ill. to do battle with the ninth-ranked Northwestern Wildcats, Sunday, Dec. 12.

WEEKLY UPDATE: Last time out, Eastern Michigan played host to Cleveland State, Friday, Dec. 3. The Eagles capped a festive night of competition and ceremonies to record a decisive 38-3 win.
EMU took nine of the 10 bouts on the night, highlighted by a thrilling come-from-behind 6-4 victory by EMU senior Nick Hendrick, whose stunning takedown late in the third period brought the near-capacity crowd to its feet. Following a successful dual meet win, the Eagles honored everyone involved with the opening of EMU's newly-renovated locker room.
“It was a great night for EMU wrestling, not only because of the win, but because alumni, friends and supporters of the program were recognized for their dedication and commitment to this program,” DelPorto said. “As for the wrestling, people saw five new faces in the starting line-up with Jared Germaine, Filiberto Colon, Mike LeHolm, Khodor Hoballah and Nick Whitenburg.”

EAGLES AND 'CATS: EMU takes on Northwestern, who is ranked ninth-nationally and has four wrestlers ranked in the top-20, according to the latest Intermat rankings.
“Northwestern has a very strong line-up,” DelPorto said. “The guys that are ranked have earned it and are as tough as they are ranked. The other guys in their starting line-up who aren't ranked are probably on the cusp of being ranked and are very talented. We are going to have to show up in Evanston and wrestle very hard and very smart to compete for a victory.”
Last year's meeting saw the Eagles come one match away from upsetting the visiting 'Cats before NU's John Schoen recorded a tech. fall against EMU senior Josh Lewis at 197-lbs. The five points were just enough to pull the 'Cats even with the Eagles as both teams wrestled to an 18-18 tie at Bowen Field House.

WE'RE GOING STREAKING: Largely contributing to the Eagles' 3-1 start has been junior heavyweight Wes Schroeder and freshman 197-pounder Nick Whitenburg who have combined for 12 wins in their last 14 bouts. Schroeder, currently on a four-match win streak has been a pleasant surprise in the absense of senior David Wade. Meanwhile, Whitenburg has won seven of his last eight bouts with four of those coming by way of pin.

THE CAPTAIN'S CLUB: Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the captains for the 2010-11 squad. As chosen by their peers, senior heavyweight David Wade - who is coming off a season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships - headlines the five-member group. Redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, sophomore Aaron Sulzer and juniors J.J. Johnson and Corey Phillips round out this year's captains for the Eagles.

EMU RANKED 20TH-NATIONALLY IN APR RANKINGS: Eastern Michigan University's wrestling program is tied with Pittsburgh and Princeton in the annual Academic Performance Ratings (APR) as released by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine's June Issue. It's a new program-best for the Eagle grapplers. EMU ranks ahead of all Mid-American Conference institutions in the highly-regarded poll including Northern Illinois (29th), Buffalo (44th), Kent State (47th), Central Michigan (60th) and Ohio (67th).
