Colon Leads Six Eagle Finalists at 19th Annual EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The 2010-11 season is officially underway for the Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad, representing six total finalists and one champion, as the 19th Annual EMU Open proved to be a great success at Bowen Field House, Saturday, Nov. 6. Junior transfer Filiberto Colon was the lone EMU champion as he conquered at 133-lbs. in the Open Division.
It was the start of the season for not only the Eagles, but several young wrestlers across the nation as there were 498 total entrants into the tournament which was split into two divisions, the Open and freshman/sophomore Divisions.
"We did great today,” Head Coach Derek DelPorto said of his team. “We had six total finalists, four in the Open and two in the fresh./soph. division. We had four consecutive weight classes represented at 133 (Colon), 141 (Mike LeHolm), 149 (Corey Phillips) and 157 (Aaron Sulzer).”
At 133, Colon tallied three pins, the first over John Herbert of Michigan State in 1:50. He pinned Ben Levin of Navy in 3:59 to advance into the semifinals, which setup maybe his toughest bout of the tournament as he needed 3:47 to record a fall against Zac Stevens of Michigan. In the championship, he settled for a 10-7 decision over Josh Chappa of Cumberland to conclude an impressive run in his EMU debut.
"Filiberto was very fun to watch,” DelPorto said. “He is so flexible and strong that he will give anyone problems. Because of his style, he is never out of the match. His semifinals match he proved just that. He was losing, but relentlessly kept pursuing the fall and eventually got it."
One of the five captains on this year's squad, redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, breezed through his first two bouts with ease, but suffered a minor injury during his, 13-6, quarterfinal win over Eric Olanowski of Michigan State and could not continue. DelPorto believed he was one of the best 125-pounders in the entire tournament as he has previously defeated both finalists, Christian Cullinan and eventual champion Sean Boyle of Michigan.
Other notable finishers were Mike Curby and Khodor Hoballah in the fresh./soph. division as each posted runner-up finishes at 174 and 184, respectively.
“Freshman Mike Curby and sophomore Khodor Hoballah are both very hard workers in the room during the week and it paid off,” DelPorto said. “They did a great job and we are looking forward to their futures."
The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 13, when they compete at the MSU Open in East Lansing, Mich.
