EAGLES START DUAL SEASON: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad will begin its dual season this weekend at the Sprawl & Brawl, taking on Harvard, Sacred Heart and host Binghamton in a trio of dual meet competitions.
The Eagles are eager to get out of the gates strong in dual competition this season as Head Coach Derek DelPorto held out the majority of his squad last weekend in preparation for their dual meet opener this Sunday, Nov. 21. EMU went 10-12-1 in dual meets last season.
GOOD SHOWING AT THE MSU OPEN: Junior transfer Filiberto Colon once again had a strong tournament while redshirt freshman Mike LeHolm continued to have success at the MSU Open as the Eagles competed in their second straight open tournament to begin the season last Saturday, Nov. 13. Colon and LeHolm each recorded fourth place finishes at 133 and 141, respectively.
Colon started his tournament with an opening round loss to Erik Spjut of Virginia Tech by a 7-0 decision. He then bounced back to advance past four straight opponents via three pins and an injury default before setting up a rematch against Spjut in the third place match. The result was much closer, but Colon once again fell victim to Spjut by a 4-1 decision.
LeHolm breezed past his first two opponents with a first round pin of former MAC champion, Pat McLemore (NIU), at 2:29 and a 6-1 second round decision over Alex Warren of Indiana. After dropping a 12-4 major decision to Juan Archuleta of Purdue, LeHolm bounced back to defeat returning All-American Cashe Quiroga of Purdue, 2-1, and advance to the third place match. It went the distance and then some, but Matt Irwin of the University of Indianapolis took the bout with a 2-1 overtime decision.
THE CAPTAIN'S CLUB: Head Coach Derek DelPorto announced the captains for the 2010-11 squad. As chosen by their peers, senior heavyweight David Wade - who is coming off a season in which he qualified for the NCAA Championships - headlines the five-member group. Redshirt freshman Jared Germaine, sophomore Aaron Sulzer and juniors J.J. Johnson and Corey Phillips round out this year's captains for the Eagles.
